I love how urban fantasy mixes magic and the real world, and I’m obsessed with stories that explore identity, especially when life throws you a curve ball and you need to recalibrate your existence around questions like “Who am I? Where am I going?” These books are set in contemporary fantasy universes and explore the themes of identity in different ways. Their worlds are bleak, which makes the spots of humor shine brighter and the protagonists’ triumphs all that more satisfying. As Ursula LeGuin said, “There must be darkness to see the stars.”

I've never read a horror story like this one! First, our protagonist and viewpoint character is a unique delight, from her close and turbulent relationship with her family to her (well researched, as far as I can tell!) extensive insect knowledge, and even more features you just don't see in the average haunted house protagonist.
And then there are all the extremely strange story events! I enjoyed being surprised at every turn, even in such an otherwise commonplace location as a reasonably sized house in the American suburbs. There's something in this story to scare everyone, even if it's the entirely natural possibility that a parent might be getting seriously ill. But don't worry, there are extremely strange supernatural spooks involved too! I highly recommend it for fans of supernatural horror and complicated family relationships.

I was surprised at the beginning because I thought Vico would be a main character, but he ended up being the monster’s victim in the first few pages. A very chilling scene. The author was great at describing Puerto Rico to the point I could picture the setting vividly without ever visiting Puerto Rico in real life. All the scenes were interesting and moved the plot forward. I really liked how the teenagers teamed up to try and solve the mystery of the monster. They each had a past they regretted. My favorite line in the book, "You’ve been watching too many movies. Things just aren’t that interesting in real life.”

On the wall in my office, I have an old newspaper article containing a recipe for Boris Karloff's guacamole. (If you're interested, the title of the article is "Boris Karloff Mad About Mexican Food.") I keep it there because it reminds me of what I love about this genre, in that monsters can contain multitudes. They're not just evil... they can also love guacamole. A good monster novel will have you both cowering in fear and feeling a pang of empathy for the creature, making it a ton of fun to read.

Deviating from my usual recommendations into
horror with this one, one of my favorite shows in the last few years was
Haunting of Hill House, and this book carried very similar vibes (it’s also one
of the book’s comps.)
Gailey does a phenomenal job slowly revealing what
happened to the Crowder family and how it pushed Vera and her mother apart,
overlaid with a mystery of what’s wrong with the Crowder House now. Is it haunting? Is it all in Vera’s head? Is the artist renting a room responsible?
It kept me guessing the entire way, and every reveal had me on the edge of my
seat. Gailey is a master of subtlety and someone to read, even if horror isn’t
your usual cup of tea.

I have always been shy and overthink new experiences, so I typically just don’t do whatever it is. I hate that about myself, but I struggle to overcome it. That’s why the werewolf has always fascinated me. The wolf knows no fear, either of people or experiences. The wolf is freedom from all the constraints of human society, and to be able to call up the wolf, transform, and leave all the expectations of humanity behind and live free, relying on your instincts, is very appealing to someone who doesn’t like crowds or cities or answering to a boss at work.
Ordinarily, a werewolf novel with a strong emphasis on the romance angle wouldn’t rate so highly with me, but Kelley Armstrong’s book was the right one at the right time. Elana, our heroine, is the world’s only female werewolf; her job has been killing rogue shapeshifters. She gets tired of that and tries to retire and live as a normal human, but that doesn’t work out.
What I liked about this was that it was my first exposure to a werewolf novel that really dealt with the political and social dynamics of a worldwide werewolf pack. Fortunately, Armstrong is a great storyteller, so there is more here than politics or romance. Her worldbuilding is fantastic, as evidenced by the fact this became the first in a long series of Otherworld novels.
