The most recommended books for 17 year olds

Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre follows the format of a romance novel: a governess falls in love with her employer, they overcome impediments, and they live happily ever after. Add a madwoman in the attic, Thornfield Hall in flames, and Mr. Rochester’s voice calling to Jane across the winds, and you have an unforgettable romance novel.

I admire Jane immensely. Her journey from being a suffering student at Lowood School to an independent woman is as relevant as ever. Through every experience, she asserts her autonomy but never wavers in her moral compass.

In Brontë’s world, love involves every fiber of one’s being, not just emotions or desire. Mr. Rochester is a complex, conflicted man who proves himself worthy of Jane’s love. For me, they have set the standard of the romantic heroine and hero. 

Nyx will do anything to save her people, including marrying the terrible Ignifex, the evil ruler of her kingdom. But there is more to Ignifex than she initially imagined, and as Nyx falls in love with him, she fights to find a way to save both her people and her love. This book portrays such fun banter between Nyx and Ignifex and poses a truly difficult riddle that is bound to break your heart.

Orphan’s Song is a lot more of a subtle allegory than some of the books on this list, but that is not a criticism! The author has such a gorgeous writing style, and her world really draws you in. It’s the kind of place you want to visit, but it doesn’t bog down the story. The music theme is also very well done, and there’s a hint of mystery that keeps you turning pages. If you like griffons, this is the book for you.

I love a book that pushes my boundaries and allows me to see things from a different perspective in an intimate way, and this book certainly does that.

It features Ander, a non-binary main character who deals with issues of racism and immigration. Despite the heavy topics, the book is filled with tender moments, a wonderful look at Mexican American culture, and is largely a joyous and emotional love story. 

Action is one of the harder things to get right in a novel. But if you want to see a master at work, Larry Correia’s your man.

This book delivers the usual cinematic masterpieces of violence Correia’s fans have come to know and love, wrapped inside tight, complex plotting and believable, empathetic characters, all in a fresh setting not commonly explored in epic fantasy. 

Emma O’Donovan is a pretty and popular 18-year-old whose life completely changes after she attends a couple of parties and the following day is found semi-conscious on her doorstep. Unaware of what she has been through the night before, Emma struggles to cope with the public shaming that ensues. This is a brilliant examination of consent, rape culture, and how hard it can be to speak out and seek justice.

Maddy is not, and never will be, a bad girl. She's just a scared girl that did some very, very bad things.

That doesn't mean I wasn't cheering her on. Maddy is the kind of heroine that I fantasized about jumping into the pages to fight for. I cussed out many a side-character in my head, just wishing they would try to talk to me like that so I could give them what they deserve.

But Maddy gets her lick back without my help - and it's a remorseless gorefest. The ending of this book is part slasher, part action film that I needed. After getting frustrated with all her hardships, I needed Maddy’s revenge to take over the book, just like her rage took over her.

The bloodthirsty roses, Isra the blind beauty, and Gem the intriguing beast. It was an intriguing combo that first made me pick up this book and start the beginning of this adventure. That isn't to say that this book is all sweetness, there are most definitely moments that had me seething with anger. The way the 'perfect' Smooth Skins treated the flawed one of their own kind, and the Monstrous struggling to survive outside the dome. But by far my most favorite part was how Gem and Isla bonded over gardening together. Yes, it was originally a lie so that Gem could gather information to help his own people, but it turned into some of the most character-building scenes that tied the whole story together in a rose-shaped bow.

If you know anything about me, you’ll know I love ghost stories, though not the really scary ones.

The one takes place in Melbourne (where I and the author live), and includes many of our eccentricities – laugh out loud for locals! I love reading books set places I know, especially when I get to feel smug because I know some obscure fact mentioned in the book.

This story is Young Adult, and features an interesting premise. Anton Marin is taking a gap year to test out the family business of dispatching ghosts to their eternal rest. He falls in admiring hate with Rani Cross, who comes from an English company with a different method of dispatch.

Pryor’s released a sequel, and it is absolutely sitting in my to-be-read pile!

I loved Lyra. I'm not sure I've ever encountered a protagonist who is so prone to lying, but I can forgive her anything because of her determination to save her friend Roger. Lyra is bold, reckless, and endearing. The Golden Compass also has a memorable supporting cast. My favourites are the air balloon pilot Lee Scoresby; the armoured bear Iorek; and of course Lyra's familiar Pantalaimon. The high-stakes plot moves quickly and unpredictably. The settings are exotic and imaginative. This is a classic children's tale that gives adults much to ruminate on in terms of religion, politics, and belief systems.
