When I left the lab and started writing, that scientist’s need for real-world sense stuck with me and became a theme in everything I write. The authors I like understand that “suspension of disbelief” is a limited resource, so they’d better only ask readers for it when it counts. Get the baseline facts and logic right, and I’ll believe and enjoy the fantastical stuff spun from it so much more.

This book blew me away! This time, it wasn’t about science in a strict sense but rather the “scientific mindset” the book was written with. Every aspect of a real zombie war is honestly considered—all the ramifications of an event so enormous—versus the simplistic way filmmakers portray it.

In my high school creative writing class, my teacher once said that good writing was a bit like looking at a star. If you look directly at it, it gets a little fuzzy and hard to see. But if you look just off to the side, the star becomes vivid and clear. That, to me, is exactly the power of spooky stories for young readers. We all deal with monsters, to varying degrees, throughout our lives. Even kids. But if we look at it just off to the side, through the angle of a fun, spooky story, those monsters suddenly become much more comprehensible. More faceable. More beatable.
It’s been said by smarter people than me how writing horror for kids isn’t about scaring them, it’s about showing them how brave they are.

I’ve always loved the darker side of fantasy. While heroes, knights, and handsome kings can occasionally be enjoyable, I want to know the other characters who have suffered, hurt, lost, grieved, and been hardened by grim circumstances and cruel fate. Those characters demonstrate the resilience of human nature and how goodness truly can exist even in the harshest environment. I love using this darkness in my own novels to show that even the tiniest spark can shine immensely bright—a true testament to the indefatigability of our spirits.
This book delivers slow-burn action, incredibly nuanced characters, and a world that grows on you increasingly with every page. As a younger reader, I struggled with the slow pacing and the lack of real action. But going back to read it recently, I found myself sucked into the story of this bastard child in a very medieval France/England-feeling royal court.
The characters introduced alongside FitzChivalry are incredibly compelling, and everyone leaped off the page and came to life in my imagination. My therapist would say my passion for “Gary Stu” characters comes from a childhood of inadequacy. I was always smaller than the other kids (even the girls). I was sooo awkward. Sports? Forget about it. Also, I was a kleptomaniac. Wait… I’m not sure I was supposed to tell you that last one. When I open up a book and become an attractive, smart, athletic pseudo-Ryan my inner child takes the wheel of a monster truck. And life is good.
Speaking of wish-fulfillment, Rezkin is simultaneously the most competent and incompetent young man I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about. He’s a Gary Stu because he is basically a warrior god. His only weakness is his lack of experience in… everything else. (He does grow savvier as the series progresses, but until it he does, hilarity ensues.) This is definitely my second favorite book (very closely following The Name of the Wind.) I want to be Rezkin so hard. Until then I’ll have to be content reading the book over and over and over.
