As a refugee myself, I was attracted to read about the lives and experiences of other refugees, not merely those from my own community or background, but especially those from other backgrounds–which is probably reflected in the books that I’ve chosen for my list.
I found myself involved with the characters and came to care for them. Moreover, I was struck by the author's desire to inspire readers to encourage discussion of Afghanistan and so keep the nation in the wider public consciousness.
The book certainly did that for me and is unforgettable, even though I read it over 20 years ago! to sweep you along with her narrative, create (and compromise) complex
characters, and make distant worlds and alien societies credible.
So I was very pleased when she decided to
continue the story of the characters who first appeared in the Vatta’s War
series into a new sequence of books. Into the Fire is only the second of these, but it has got me totally
hooked. There are loose ends, escaped
characters from previous stories, and a really engaging heroine with a very dark
side. What is not to like!

As a female writer, I love digging into the minds of women characters, especially in light of their family circumstances. I think we can sometimes underestimate the importance of a strong, loving family unit in terms of personal development. But what’s amazing is how a person’s story can be redeemed even if they were raised in a less-than-ideal environment. Even though I got pretty lucky in the parent department, I know not a lot of people have. And I love showing others through fiction that despite hardships they’ve had to face along the way, they are still loved and still wanted by a God who knows them better than anyone.

I loved a number of things about Pennyblade. For starters, the main character’s (Kyra’s) race, the Commrach, who are like elves, are ruthless libertines and hedonists.
The Pennyblade world is a fascinating and grim place where same sex relationships are punishable by death and the action, which is visceral and very explicit, just keeps coming.
I really liked that this is a novel about prejudices, it appealed to me as someone from an ethnic minority group who grew up in London in the late 1970s / early 80s and experienced racism.
Fortunately, Pennyblade has plenty of humour which makes the grimdark nature of the book more palatable.
