The book's themes of heroism, friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil resonate deeply. In addition, each of his characters feels like an aspect of oneself; the introspection it inspires is brilliant!

The Lord of the Rings instills a sense of wonder, ignites the imagination, and imparts timeless wisdom, which heavily transformed my perspective on life, my values, and my understanding of the human condition.

I enjoyed the clever world-building and its realistic yet fantastical elements. The magic system intertwines beautifully with the world.

I found myself feeling for the characters and wondering about their connection with the world and its magic. As I learned about the plot, I kept trying to predict the big pay-off and was still surprised when I learned the truth!

The book is full of clever twists and turns, and I loved how it kept me guessing. I still get shivers thinking about some of the fight scenes. 

The Ruins of Gorlan for me was a reminder that you never let anyone tell you, “you can’t”.

It was a fear that permeates down deep. I remember how I felt when I couldn’t go into the army, was unable to go to Devry, and I didn’t want the ordinary.

For Will, it all changes and his fantastic journey begins as he’s chosen to be the ranger’s apprentice. And I cheered inside. I knew it. He didn’t give up. We didn’t give up. And found what our skills were best suited for.

A book about a hobbit, thirteen dwarves, and a wizard may seem an odd choice to reflect on the fragility of human culture—but I think this is the most human of journeys I’ve read, as Bilbo interrupts his gentle life in the Shire for an uncomfortable adventure.

Now I’m reading it to my nine-month-old son and noticing how much this is a story about social vulnerability—Bilbo’s displacement, the dwarves adrift from their ancestral home, the ruined town of Dale, and the damage caused by the dragon Smaug in the name of amassing a fortune (which he simply sits on like some big corporation with its profits). In the middle of all that devastation, it reminds me that friendship is one of the most important aspects of humanity.

I loved the relationship between the boy and the dragon in this book. Although stories showing the bond between child and dragon are common, Paolini makes it new by sharing a depth of feeling between the two.

The development of that relationship and the world-building of the setting make for a fascinating read that kept my attention. This book was so captivating that I had to read the other two in the trilogy.

The ethics of war are rarely explored with more punch than in Ender’s Game. The story begins with what seems like a standard military coming-of-age tale with new recruits arriving at basic training – but very quickly, the reader learns that this ain’t your granddaddy’s basic. I appreciate the blend of cool sci-fi with realistic interpersonal conflict between recruits.

But the whole thing is ultimately a misdirection, and the surprise ending brings to center stage, in full spotlight, the question of to what lengths we will go in order to win a war. Who are we willing to sacrifice? What damage to our future are we willing to accept for victory in the present? It is written with a soft touch, but the weight of its message is undeniable.

This is a dystopian fantasy set in a future world in which a virus has wiped out most of the planet except those left behind have magical powers.

I love dystopian future books. I also love fantasy so this was a match made in heaven for me. Nora created such a detailed yet believable universe. There is a powerful female lead and she is pitted against the evil version of herself in a battle to end or save the world.

It’s got magic, it’s got action, it’s got romance, it’s got everything! I was hooked from start to finish and devoured all three books in a couple of weeks.

The world of Pern felt so real to me that I wanted to be a part of it. Everything made sense: The culture, the politics, and the environment. Even the role of dragon and rider felt right to me.

I fell in love with the characters right away and didn’t want the story to end. It made me want to have a dragon of my own and have that inseparable bond of trust and love.

This book is so underrated, it’s painful. A truly engrossing read. Han Alister must rise up from the slums of the city to embrace his magic, and find revenge for his innocent sister’s death. This book is our introduction to Miles and shows the birth of the Naismith persona, and it is fabulous fun on every page. I devoured this series like potato chips.
