I love a library, an eccentric bookshop, or the roadside book exchange cupboards where I live in rural southwest France. There is serendipity and synergy in what can be found through browsing (as opposed to purposeful searching). I am the author of five historical novels set in medieval Europe and centred on strong female leads. Idiosyncratic bookshops and lovely libraries bring unexpected twists to my research and writing. My six-year-old grandson recently started to read after his mum and I read many bedtime stories to him. It was a thrilling moment to hear him join the ranks of readers. Make-believe is my vocation, calling to me since earliest childhood. Not too surprising, for I was raised in a Southern Gothic household, simmering with mendacity and thwarted desires. Back then, I plotted stories for my dolls and scribbled plays of love and murder for backyard productions with the neighbor girls. Living and schooling were necessary preparation for the next story or play. I love to read. Reading since I was 3 years old, devouring book after book. As I grew, my taste expanded. This is an old and rare book. The short stories within are fantastical tales told in allegories to the Bible. Every page brought to me this wondrous world of words, capturing my attention, and keeping me spellbound throughout the pages. I devoured this book and the entire series following The Sword, the Ring, and the Parchment as a younger reader! Not only were the adventures exciting and the book full of plot twists and cliff hangers, but it also explains truth in a simplistic, easy-to-understand way. The book is family friendly and has encouraged many readers we’ve recommended it to. It’s a story I’ll go back to again and again to experience the thrill of becoming a young warrior training with a sword in a world where two kingdoms battle for control, one of evil, darkness, and chains and the other a loving King who offers hope, truth, and a personal relationship with himself.
