This was the first NLP book I read! It is so easy to understand and so relevant to using NLP in the workplace. I love the language used to describe the application of NLP in the work environment and life, and it describes NLP itself in clear terms. 

Applying the information in this book to my work situation at the time made a huge difference in how I interacted with my clients. This book is one of the best examples of effective language, using simple terms and fabulous examples and metaphors. It was a great starting point for me on my NLP journey.

Charvet presents 14 significant language/behaviours that distinguish how we react to our experiences that may be different from those with whom we wish to have a great relationship or influence. Brothers Chip and Dan Heath authored some of my favorite books (like Made to Stick), so it’s no wonder I love the content of Chip Heath’s one-time mentee Berger, as well. He looks at persuasion from a variety of angles and illustrates how different approaches work when we need someone to act or think a particular way. Berger opens with a hostage standoff where a deadly outcome seems unavoidable, and he breaks down why a particular approach beat the odds. Then he does it again and again (with everything from political advertising to kids willingly eating laundry detergent) to help us understand how minds can be nudged one way or another. Even the table of contents is too irresistible to not keep turning pages.

My father instilled in me a love for books and before he passed away at 92, this was his favorite one. We would read it separately during the day and discuss on our nightly Facetime calls. Being a pharmacologist, Dad loved the breakdowns of how the brain works. And I, who have long been interested in why we do the things we do, was completely drawn to the idea that we could retrain our brain. Consider this book a science-based version of “The Secret” and so much more. And had I known about manifesting when I first came to this country and experienced those first feelings of being an outsider then maybe I could have manifested away that angst.
