The most recommended books about the moon

I love this subversive, touching, and weird picture book biography about the author of Goodnight, Moon (and more than 100 other books). In 42 pages, Mac has managed to question the whole concept of biography and traditional notions about what children’s books (and all books) should be like—both sentiments reflected in Margaret life and work—while at the same time providing a perfect portrait of the aspects of the author’s life most relevant to her writing, and probing questions of censorship and tastemaking. Among other things, Mac shows young creators how to live in a celebratory manner even if the world seems to have turned its back on their work. He does all this while keeping the reader curious (there’s tension!), engaged (there’s storytelling!), and happy (it’s funny!)—but not too happy (the ending is tragic and philosophical!). This might be my favorite picture book biography of all time.

The magical tale, Music for Mister Moon, is about a little girl named Harriet, who likes to be called Hank. She loves nothing more than to play her cello, alone. When her parents suggest how wonderful it would be to play in a big orchestra someday, she retreats into her room playing her cello. When the owl hoots outside her window she loses her temper and throws a teacup. And so begins her imaginative journey that tickles the reader's imagination. On Hank’s adventure with Mr. Moon, they encounter kind and thoughtful animals with a profound understanding of acceptance and giving. Each time I read this book, I can almost hear the music of the cello float out the window, the crash of the teacup, the smell of the smoke that fills the little house. Jack Reacher can’t catch a break. Who else steps off a bus at a random stop and ends up in a turf war between Ukrainian and Albanian gangs in the middle of the United States. This is one of my favorites from the Reacher series. Lee Child has crafted a character that strikes at the heart of all of us who cheer on the forces of good and want to punish the bad actors. Lovers of justice will love Jack Reacher. His means might be harsh, but the end is satisfactory.

I absolutely adore this book for a few key reasons. I fell in love with the premise of a lonely Moon on the lookout for new friends--who hasn’t felt that way before? The author does an incredible job of weaving in facts about the first modes of transportation while keeping the book fun and relatable to children. The illustrations are beautiful and by the end of the book you’ll definitely be rooting for Moon to get her first visitors.

This fine coming-of-age novel was originally published in two big red volumes. It's large and reads like an enormous European tapestry laid out in some cold castle museum, with vivid dyes and a thousand patterned intricacies to ponder. It was a literary sensation when it was published, a favorite of the young romantics of the WWI generation, and Mackenzie followed it up with several branching-off sequels. He writes with such vividry that the dusky London streets and country cottages in this book are fresh and living even now. This book affected a young F. Scott Fitzgerald so much that in the early drafts of Fitz's first novel, he actually copped the name of the protagonist of this book.

This novel evokes an extraordinary range of emotions. Skibell works wonders with folklore and history, turning out a tale of tales that is by turns shocking and horrifying, tender, and outrageously funny. The language is deceptively simple and beautiful. Consider this description from the murdered narrator, on returning to his plundered neighborhood after climbing out of a mass grave: “In front of every house were piles of vows and promises, all in broken pieces. How I could see such things, I cannot tell you.” The balance here—of imagination, grief, and lightness—is exquisite.

When several transsexuals turn up dead in the garbage chutes of various hotels in Cincinnati, NY, and Philadelphia, the police match the murder dates to a major league baseball team visiting at the time.

Fingers point at Teddy Moon, an ace relief pitcher who is manic-depressive and suffers from occasional bouts of amnesia.

After being interrogated by the police, Teddy realizes he has to uncover the murderer because he is being set up. Although this dark, murder mystery was written before today’s #MeToo movement, our culture wars, and celebrity obsessions, this book is an edgy send-up of everything that is wrong with today's American society.

When Teddy tells one of his wives, he lives like a monk, her salty retort, “Yeah, Rasputin,” captures the essence of the wicked dialogue filling this book. 

An eerie and sinister plot draws you in from the start. The three-part book gives you a historic overview of the origins of the town it plays off. Building up to a climax that had me up till late to learn the outcome. At first, I thought it was the epilogue that the author cleverly put in front to give you a taste of what's to come as the story unfolds, I realized my mistake and, in the end, was surprised that it ended in an unsettling end. 

This is one heck of a good book. 

A mysterious “explosion” on the moon may herald the end of the world, but don’t expect a lot of heavy action. This book is character driven. No cardboard cutouts here. Get ready to meet real people, complicated and contradictory as real people are—my favorite thing in a novel. 

The book’s pace is slow as menace builds. It allows you to revel in the quality of the writing. As I read, I knew I was going to read this book a second time to enjoy the gracefulness of its language. 

Book 11 in a series set in the 1930s. Mona Moon is intelligent, charming, sassy…and rich! A combination guaranteed to get her in trouble in the ‘30s!

The action is set in the background of a fascinating era in America, and I am pulled into that setting, though the history is always given as part of the story.
