I am an animal lover, a former professional equestrian, an elementary school librarian, and an avid reader. Reading is definitely my superpower. I don’t so much read as devour books of all kinds. As a district library coordinator, I read all levels of books, from board to picture, to middle grade, to chapter, to YA and adult. Books and animals are my jam.

While history tells a very pragmatic story about our human tendency to gather near water, literature tells more haunting stories of water. The literature of my youth was no different. In these books, water and watery habitats are both settings and characters. Sometimes protagonist, sometimes antagonist, always present. Perhaps my years of immersion in these books imprinted so deeply that I had no choice but to arrange my first poetry collection as a journey of water. After all, water is one of Earth’s clocks, and I prefer its version of time.
This was the first book I ever pulled from the big kids’ shelves at our library. I read it in the big chair in the den until Mother chased me outside with dire threats that I was ruining my eyes.
Then I read among straw bales and a heap of yard cats until nightfall lured the cats away. Then I read in bed until Mother threatened further direness if I didn’t turn off my light. Then I read by moonlight until I fell asleep and woke again the next day to read more.

This book is a novel by Marguerite Henry, based on the true story of the Godolphin Arabian, one of the founding stallions of the Thoroughbred breed. The story follows the journey of Sham, an Arabian horse, and his caretaker Agba, from the stables of the Sultan of Morocco to the streets of London. Agba remains loyal to Sham through many trials and tribulations until his true value is recognized.
I grew up on a horse farm, have ridden horses since I was a little girl, and spent many years training and competing dressage horses. People become equestrians because of the special connection that a horse can have with a human. Sham’s and Agba’s story is about this special, transcendent love. This book has remained one of my favorites in part because I found my own “Sham.”

I love cozy mysteries with a touch of sweet, clean romance, a splash of faith, and, best of all—a cold, wet nose and four paws. Animals bring richness and compassion to a story. They can provide comic relief, a sympathetic ear to be scratched, a built-in radar for identifying bad guys, and unconditional love when the protagonist needs it most. My love for this genre is probably why I was drawn to it for my debut novel, which came out in August 2022. The cover is a giveaway for who has the paws in this story.
Technically, this isn’t a cozy because Harlow Zane is part of law enforcement, but I love Elizabeth Goddard’s suspenseful romances, and this one centers around a cadaver dog—a beagle named Nell.
The dog plays a vital role in the discovery of the killer and in rescuing Harlow and her second-chance love interest. Nell makes a Goddard book even better!

This dog story is one that kept me on the edge of my seat! I recommend it because it is well written as well as educational. It shows just how stressful losing a beloved pet can be and the desperation by family members to find their lost dog. The book details how a skittish little Beagle named Poppy escaped from his home in Southern California and how his guardian, a volunteer rescuer, received help from other lost dog rescuers that ultimately helped her to capture the scared little dog.

I was thrown into the deep end to learn about autism when our first son was diagnosed as autistic. As first-time parents, how were we to know that the struggles we faced went beyond the norm? We also have twins, one of whom is ADHD and the other dyslexic. Thus, not only have I spent a lot of time learning about autism, but I also enjoy turning to fiction to learn how others both struggle and find solutions. I started writing because the bedtime routine with my kiddos was very difficult. Nearly twelve years later, I am still using my writing to overcome the obstacles in my life.
I am typically not a fan of books about movie stars, but Jess and Anna stole my heart.
Maybe it’s because I love Notting Hill, and this had that same kind of escape feel to it. Both characters suffer from anxiety (and Anna also suffers from PTSD) and each is so good for the other. I loved how each woman nurtured and supported the other.
Anna provides a sanctuary for Jess, and the whole book feels like a warm, comfortable escape for the reader as well.
