It’s quite simple, I just love history. I particularly like the dual timeline format because it’s a reminder that what has happened in the past remains relevant to the present. The narratives might be set hundreds of years apart, but there are common themes that continue to shape our lives and define us as human beings–some of them good and others that are potentially more destructive. I now write this sort of fiction, and I continue to devour it as a reader. I hope you enjoy the books on this list as much as I have.
This was the first book by Diane Setterfield that I read, and I’ve since been back for more and more. I love the characters and the way the story unfolds—that ‘story within a story’ device drew me in immediately and kept me hooked.
It’s a gothic ghost story and Vida is a deliciously unreliable narrator—I make no apology for using that phrase even though it is often criticised as belonging on a 1980s degree course, because that’s when I did my degree in English Language & Literature, so it makes perfect sense to me!
It both directs and misleads at every step, so that when everything twists at the end, I didn’t see it coming. Wonderful and enchanting.

My house was for sure haunted growing up, I’ve had a lot of nightmares over the years, and I found solace in the horror genre. I love including social issues and controversial topics in my plots. I love underdogs and the downtrodden. I enjoy unique and quirky characters with excellent, appropriate, and sometimes noir-ish voices. Twists and major reveals in genre books and movies are also very important to me. I was overwhelmed by this crazy, lovable, frightening novel. It fit right in with my paranormal/horror bend when I read it many years ago, and it provoked my interest in writing a few titles in the genre.

I loved how claustrophobic and creepy this was. This is another story where I thought I had at least some of it figured out. But nope, I was wrong every time. The ending was not only jaw-dropping and ingenious but satisfying, too—something I think is tricky to achieve.

What I love best about the fantastical is that it allows me to think and write about deep matters symbolically. I love everything Juliet Marillier writes. She is so good at using her knowledge of folklore to create magical stories in which the heroine must save the day. This book departs from her usual Celtic setting, taking us instead to Transylvania in the time of the Ottoman Empire and a reimagining of the Twelve Dancing Princesses.
