Book cover of The Last Flight

JB Schroeder Author Of Runaway

From my list on women confronting danger to reclaim their lives.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love stories about everyday people ripped out of their normal lives and forced to face the craziest situations head-on. I mean, can you even imagine? Could you find a way to survive and win? To face down life-threatening danger and evil people and rise from the ashes stronger and smarter? Iā€™m pretty sure Iā€™d kill if it meant protecting my childrenā€¦but strand me in the wilderness and Iā€™d likely perish from eating the wrong berries. I hate to be hungry, but I love to bring edgy romantic suspense and twisty psychological suspense to readers. Enjoy!

JB's book list on women confronting danger to reclaim their lives

JB Schroeder Why did JB love this book?

Perhaps donā€™t choose this one if you are getting on a flight, otherwiseā€”read it now! Two women are desperate to escape their lives. They both come up with plans that involve brave cunning and sheer determinationā€”but a twist of fate makes those plans collide. The author keeps the twists coming (I was so impressed) and you wonā€™t guess them all (even more impressed). Itā€™s gripping, page-turning, fascinatingā€”and everyone Iā€™ve recommended this book to has also loved it!

Savannah Kade always delivers smart, savvy heroinesā€”itā€™s her thing! But youā€™ll also find an alpha hero who is equal parts protective, sexy, and sweet. Oh yeahā€”and heā€™s a firefighter, too! Hot, hot, hot! This heroine is fighting for her new beginning and confronting danger she didnā€™t see coming. Creepy twists in the serial killer plot are left as hooks to be resolved later in the seriesā€”but trust me, the ending will satisfy.

Sometimes, love is not all it takes to help the ones you love. Sometimes, love pulls you in different directions. Lisa Regan is a stellar writer, and Vanishing Girls was a literal canā€™t-put-it-down read. I raced through the first four books in this series (Detective Josie Quinn series) and canā€™t wait to read the rest. I promise if you try it, youā€™ll feel the sameā€”itā€™s addictive! Detective Josie is a messā€”but youā€™ll be rooting for her big time. This situation is dark and disturbing, and this author excels at making things worse and worse for her characters. JB's book list on women confronting danger to reclaim their lives

JB Schroeder Why did JB love this book?

Fair warning: this book is extra dark, with an extra disturbing serial killer, probably because his methods seem terrifyingly possible. Not a read for everyone! That said, Toni Anderson books are one of my absolute auto-buys for romantic suspense. This series is about hostage negotiators, and itā€™s fascinating stuff. Hero Shane is part of the Hostage Rescue Team and Yael is a computer whiz. Always excellent writing, great dialogue, fabulous characters, harrowing danger, and sexy romance. Iā€™ve read loads of Toni Anderson and she never disappoints!

Joan Hall Author Of Cold Dark Night: Legends of Madeira

From my list on mystery and suspenseā€¦with a bit of legends and folklore.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always enjoyed mystery and suspense storiesā€”Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark being two of my all-time favorite authors. Throw in some legends and folklore, and Iā€™m hooked. I like well-crafted stories that keep me turning the pages. Those that stump me in figuring out the mystery are a plus for me. I love books with descriptive settings that place me, as the reader, in the heart of the action.

Joan Hall Why did Joan love this book?

Dual-timeline, legends, and folklore drew me to this story. While it was co-authored, the dual story blends perfectly as if written by a single person. Past and present come together, and an age-old mystery is solved.

If you enjoy stories with a bit of supernatural, this one is for you.

Jan Sikes Author Of Jagged Feathers

From my list on unique and compelling character-driven stories.

Why am I passionate about this?

I have been an avid reader since I could first decipher words. But I am also an author. I write compelling stories from the heart and love character-driven stories. Therefore, I gravitate toward reading stories that tick these boxes for me. I have read thousands of books in my lifetime, and still feel the same excitement when I open a new one that I felt when I first read the Dick and Jane primers and Grimmā€™s Brothers Fairy Tales.

Jan's book list on unique and compelling character-driven stories

Jan Sikes Why did Jan love this book?

I love reading fantasy when it is well-written and draws me into a world unlike any we know. This book does that in spades. Who knew there was a practice called necromancy, using dark magic powers to resurrect the dead? This author demonstrates great knowledge in the use of herbs, potions, magical elixirs, and other forms of ancient magical practices throughout the story. The characters, their motives, and their insights help move the story in such a way that the reader is caught up and involved. If youā€™ve never read a fantasy book or think you wouldnā€™t like fantasy, I invite you to pick this book up and give it a chance. I highly recommend it!

Jan Sikes Why did Jan love this book?

I love books that include paranormal aspects. Not in the sense of vampires, but things like psychics, mediums, or empaths. This book is about an empath who has struggled her entire life to figure out how to utilize it in a good way and not let it overwhelm her. The story also involves some Native American myths which is also something I am naturally drawn to. Elidor is an archaeologist. What a fascinating occupation! When she and her partner make a massive discovery, she must decide whether to keep it a secret or to hand it over to the dig director. Greed can make a man do things he wouldnā€™t ordinarily do. I devoured this book. The colorful characters, the setting in the fictitious town of Joshua, and the storyline make this a most compelling read.

Book cover of Urban Shaman

Fannie Price Author Of After the Flesh

From my list on urban fantasy and paranormal mystery featuring POC.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been a fan of creature features movies and the old classic horror stories since childhood. Once I discovered urban fantasy it became my new genre of choice as far as reading. I love each authorā€™s storytelling, worldbuilding, character development, etc. I find it helps me to read the negative reviews. Readers know when a writer is being authentic in their work vs when they are phoning it in. Listening to readers and understanding what puts them off, helps me craft a better story by avoiding the pitfalls that become clichĆ© or annoying.

Ms. Murphy takes her time with the world building, in a universe where the supernatural is not known but discovered, and it is a treat to discover this world through the eyes of the protagonist. Itā€™s also a switch that in this story at least, there is not a romance element. I also appreciate that Native American culture and folklore were not exploited in order to make a better story. I enjoyed this was not your typical werewolf, vampire, witch read and brought in something new, or at least something not often written about.

Robin Yocum Author Of The Sacrifice of Lester Yates

From my list on the baddest badass dudes of crime fiction.

Why am I passionate about this?

My novels range from coming-of-age to suspense. I was an award-winning crime and investigative reporter for the Columbus Dispatch for 11 years. That background helps me with the investigative aspects of my books. I enjoy exploring the moral dilemmas often presented in real life. My characters all have morals, but I like putting them in compromising situations. Itā€™s easy to sit back and judge others, but how far would you go to keep your own son out of jail? Would the love of your son get in the way of your morals? Itā€™s never black or white. Most of life is spent dancing in and out of the vast gray area in the middle.

Robin Yocum Why did Robin love this book?

Yeah, I know, naming Jack Reacher as one of the badasses of crime fiction is the equivalent of a six-inch putt. A gimme. Child has taken a totally implausible premiseā€”a six-foot-five former Army MP wandering around the United States and finding trouble with nothing but an ATM card in his pocketā€”and created one of the best characters in suspense literature. When Reacher is on the hunt, the results are never in doubt, which is why we love him. Heā€™s the fullback coming through the line, time and time again, and no one can stop him. One reviewer of Childā€™s books said that Reacher is never the underdog. Thatā€™s a perfect description.
