I’m a voracious reader, and I’ve come across way too many books where the female MC was an airheaded TSTL (too stupid to live) ninny. I don’t want to read about women who have to be saved by big, strong men. I want to see women who can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and save themselves, maybe with a little help from the big, strong man if she needs or wants it, AND who can turn around and do some saving of said man of her own, should HE need it. I think the healthiest relationships, even fictional ones, are those based on mutual strength, trust, and respect.
I think that mental and emotional strength are often more hard-won than the physical kind. Fiona is a survivor. Literally. She’s the one that got away from a serial killer.
I can’t imagine the fortitude it would take to put your life back together and be able to function again after what she endured. But she not only rebuilt her life, she’s dedicated it to helping others through her search and rescue dogs. I enjoyed the weaving of her work into the heart of the story because it’s a huge part of who she is and how she copes, especially with the new danger that lands on her doorstep. Her strength and compassion are what draw taciturn Simon to her, even when he doesn’t want to be.
I love that she’s written with cracks that sometimes bleed but an inner core strong enough to keep her whole.

I think the biggest reason I love the Mercy Thompson character is her strong sense of self. She’s used to being different, on the outside. Of her family, of her pack. Being a coyote shifter has set her apart, made her a target, and ensured she always felt like an unwanted interloper, which I think is a perfect metaphor for anyone feeling different and discounted.
Rather than be beaten down, she lives her life as she sees fit. She uses her sly wit and intelligence to follow the rules on her own terms. The strong, smart person she is on the inside, at odds with her smallish stature (both human and coyote) is what attracts the interest of the local werewolf alpha, and what helps keep her alive when trouble inevitably finds her.

Linda Howard writes a lot of strong female MCs, and this is a prime example. I think the beauty of Jina is that she’s an every-woman, a happy little computer nerd helping the quasi-military GO-Teams from an air-conditioned office, who hates to sweat or get dirt under her nails. Being pulled into their world against her will pits her against some of her worst fears. But she won’t walk away because being a quitter is her worst fear of all.
I love that with every challenge thrown her way, she grows into a more confident version of herself. That confidence sparks the forbidden attraction with her team leader. Even non-gendered animal characters in books were almost always called ‘he.’ And, as I look for books to empower my daughter, I’m so happy to see that things are moving in the right direction. The narrators I’ve picked below vary in their intent: some deliberately deceive, and others do so unconsciously or through omission. In several, the twist hinges on the use of an unreliable narrator, while in others, narrative unreliability poses a moral dilemma for the reader. In a few, an added layer of unreliability emerges: the narrator’s perception is distorted by technology. In an age of AI, simulations, and deep fakes, the unreliable narrator is arguably more needed than ever, holding a mirror up to the unreliability of our own world.

This book has the best one-line denouement of all mystery novels. It is a line that will give you chills when you read it. (Or re-read it. This mystery is so good that I have reread it many times in my life, and I get chills each time.)

I’ve loved murder mysteries since childhood, and during the pandemic–when reading became a challenge–I returned to my first literary love, binging on one mystery series after another.
