The best romance books with strong women and the men who love them for it

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a voracious reader, and I’ve come across way too many books where the female MC was an airheaded TSTL (too stupid to live) ninny. I don’t want to read about women who have to be saved by big, strong men. I want to see women who can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and save themselves, maybe with a little help from the big, strong man if she needs or wants it, AND who can turn around and do some saving of said man of her own, should HE need it. I think the healthiest relationships, even fictional ones, are those based on mutual strength, trust, and respect.

Worth Any Price

What is my book about?

The hot new karate instructor is delicious enough to melt Amber Lovett’s common sense. But it’s his kindness toward her son that has her risking her heart on another try at love. Except he’s not who she thought he was. Billionaire Richard Beaumont isn’t looking for a relationship with a struggling single mom. But the connection between them is undeniable, even though Amber has no idea who he really is. Except it seems she does.

When Richard realizes his disastrous mistake, he’ll have to earn not only Amber’s forgiveness but her trust as well. And she’ll have to decide if giving him another chance is worth the price, especially when her past shows up to remind her exactly how high the cost of love can be.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Woman Left Behind

Nika Rhone Why did I love this book?

Linda Howard writes a lot of strong female MCs, and this is a prime example. I think the beauty of Jina is that she’s an every-woman, a happy little computer nerd helping the quasi-military GO-Teams from an air-conditioned office, who hates to sweat or get dirt under her nails. Being pulled into their world against her will pits her against some of her worst fears. But she won’t walk away because being a quitter is her worst fear of all.

I love that with every challenge thrown her way, she grows into a more confident version of herself. That confidence sparks the forbidden attraction with her team leader. He’s drawn to her inner strength and sense of determination, as well as her smart mouth. I appreciated that she doesn’t turn into a Sarah Connor-type super-soldier by the end but is shown with human strengths and weaknesses that make her relatable as well as admirable.

Levi Butcher is singularly devoted to his work. As team leader for the GO-Team, his unwavering focus is on the mission. Levi knows all too well that one minor distraction can hold deadly consequences. But with the soothing, sensual voice of "Babe," the team's communication expert, constantly in his ear, keeping his concentration on the dangerous work at hand is becoming extremely difficult.

Jina Modell definitely doesn't feel like a "Babe," especially when she's working with the…

I’m all in for the romantasy of this series, even though it takes until book 2 for the HFN payoff.

Evie has had a lifetime of being treated as lesser-than, even by her family. But when she gets the chance to remake herself from the ground up, away from expectations of who she was or who she’s been told to be, she blossoms and comes into her own. Amazing what you can do when not weighed down by the preconceptions of others or yourself. This new Evie attracts the interest of a powerful magic wielder, but ironically, it’s her old identity that causes trouble for them.

Having read the other 2 books, I love the way her entire journey plays out and the strong, determined, kick-ass woman she becomes.

What is this book about?

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series-an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance.

In a realm where one's magical power determines one's worth, Lady Everleigh's lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne,…

Nika Rhone Why did I love this book?

I think the biggest reason I love the Mercy Thompson character is her strong sense of self. She’s used to being different, on the outside. Of her family, of her pack. Being a coyote shifter has set her apart, made her a target, and ensured she always felt like an unwanted interloper, which I think is a perfect metaphor for anyone feeling different and discounted.

Rather than be beaten down, she lives her life as she sees fit. She uses her sly wit and intelligence to follow the rules on her own terms. The strong, smart person she is on the inside, at odds with her smallish stature (both human and coyote) is what attracts the interest of the local werewolf alpha, and what helps keep her alive when trouble inevitably finds her.

I re-read this entire series on a regular basis whenever a new book is released; it’s that good.

Book cover of Fatal Affair

Nika Rhone Why did I love this book?

I adore the character of Sam Holland. She is a badass cop, not willing to take crap from anyone, even her fellow officers, with a smart mouth that gets her into as much trouble as it gets her out of. Her character is written with such nuance and honesty that she’s someone I’ve willingly followed through 22 books (and counting).

Sam works twice as hard to make sure she’s living up to her own expectations as much as anyone else’s, always afraid of falling short, something I think we all tend to be too hard on ourselves about at times. The love interest throughout the series sometimes struggles with her strong personality, even as he admires her for it, which I think lends a depth of realism to their relationship as it grows and sometimes flounders.

Book cover of The Search

Nika Rhone Why did I love this book?

I think that mental and emotional strength are often more hard-won than the physical kind. Fiona is a survivor. Literally. She’s the one that got away from a serial killer.

I can’t imagine the fortitude it would take to put your life back together and be able to function again after what she endured. But she not only rebuilt her life, she’s dedicated it to helping others through her search and rescue dogs. I enjoyed the weaving of her work into the heart of the story because it’s a huge part of who she is and how she copes, especially with the new danger that lands on her doorstep. Her strength and compassion are what draw taciturn Simon to her, even when he doesn’t want to be.

I love that she’s written with cracks that sometimes bleed but an inner core strong enough to keep her whole.
