I was lucky enough to read this book when it was first released in 2011. I had just gotten my first eReader, a Nook, and downloaded this book based on the cover. I won’t lie, I am a cover fanatic. Once I read it though, I quickly realized this book was more than the cover. It is well-written and pulled me out of a pretty deep reading slump.

I’ll be completely honest, Hourglass sat on my bookshelf for years. I kept pushing it off, and pushing it off, until one day I took the plunge and read it. Why did I wait so long?
I fell in love with the main character Emerson. While she was immature I had to remember her age and she does progress as the book goes on. Emerson has visions and has a hard time dealing with them like any girl would. Her caring brother hires Michael who promises he can help control these visions. The two don’t exactly hit it off right away, but their dynamic is hilarious. Their relationship was slow to build, my favorite kind. Where do I begin with this book? It is literally a tear-jerker of a romance. Anna and Bennett were never supposed to meet, but they did, and they quickly fell for each other. But things are complicated for these two. They are playing with fate and they just don’t care.
Bennett can time travel but he can also take an event in time and alter it. And as we’ve learned in many time traveling novels, that can change things in the future forever and cause a ripple effect.
The couple is just so sweet and innocent that you fall in love with them and want them so badly to make it work. I would highly recommend this series to anyone. I promise you’ll just love the sincerity and romance.

I’ve always been fascinated by time travel as a framing device in stories. Having spent my childhood hoovering up anything I could get my hands on in both the science fiction and straight-up fiction genres, an unexpected byproduct was that I found myself becoming increasingly fascinated with merging the two, eventually wrapping my head around what it would mean if time itself became more than just a construct of our own creation. Asking myself regularly the question; what if it was terrain? It took me thirty-four years to translate all of those ideas into a solid hook for a book. And a further four years to turn that hook into a fully-fledged series.
I adored this entire series from beginning to end, but I’m recommending Book 1 in the series because…well, it’s the start and also my favourite. This series launched all the way back in 2010 and even though it’s written for a young adult teen audience, it’s so well written and a joy to just kick back with on a Sunday afternoon with a cuppa.
The characterisation is brilliant, has some brilliant set pieces, and it has that Harry Potter kind of vibe with young protagonists forced into growing up a little too fast and getting to wield an altogether different kind of magic. There’s so much to love, as you learn all the rules and quirks of this universe.

I was born in Clifton, in the city of Bristol, England. Clifton is known for its elegant Georgian and Regency architecture. Growing up in these surroundings gave me an impression of what life might have been like for the people who lived there, the families upstairs and servants belowstairs. In front of a few houses on some streets, there are still stone blocks at the curb, worn smooth from countless feet entering and exiting their carriages. I have used Clifton as a setting in some of the books I have written, hoping to make those scenes more realistic and bring history alive for my readers.
