Are philosophers like detectives, in that they chase their culprit over any terrain, and follow any clue? What can count as a clue?
Given the right context, pretty much anything, a pencil placed here rather than there, a picture of a car, something someone said, a fingerprint, can count as a clue. Little surprise, it turns out, that many such ābehavioralā genes influence the way the brain is built. When I retired, I decided to share what I learned. This is a truly excellent book on brain evolution, mostly from the vertebrate and mammalian perspective. It is quite academic, though I found it much easier to read than most university-level textbooks. The flow is logical, and it covers a huge range of issues from a conceptual point of view.
