This novel begins with a chance, intimate encounter five years earlier that has lasting importance for both Cameron Pope and Rusty Caldwell.

When they met, they didn’t even exchange names and he was a soldier about to be deployed. Now, she’s a federal agent and he’s returned home to his native Kentucky hoping to lead a simple, healing life. Instead, a kidnapping affects his family and Cam is thrust into the action. When Rusty arrives, the “soldier boy” has found his “angel” again.

It’s a fast-paced, exciting adventure but there’s a developing love between the two main characters. For me, it’s that second shot at love, that hope in the face of hopelessness, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my chair.

Saving Jake made me cry in places and warmed my heart in others. Sharon Sala (one of my favorite authors) handled this troubled veteran’s homecoming with skill and accuracy.

As Jake returns to his hometown to heal, he also finds love and a way to triumph over a bully from his past. I have a soft spot for veterans with PTSD because my late grandfather, Claude Roberts, suffered from it, long before it had a name or diagnosis. It made his life more difficult than should have been necessary, but he still loved his little granddaughter, “the kid” as he called me, very much.

When Carolyn Brown writes about small-town life and the people who live there, she brings it to life with such reality the reader feels you know them.

When Jennie Sue Baker returns from New York after a failed marriage, she wants to hide and lick her wounds, then convince her father to let her work in the family oil business. Instead, she finds new friends who aren’t from her parents’ social circle including a reclusive farmer who is also a scarred veteran. Rick is very sensitive about his appearance although most of the physical scars don’t show but Jennie manages to break down the barriers.

This book caught me by the heartstrings because I live in a small town and I know how public opinion can turn for or against a person very well.

This is the most recent of the books I’ve picked, just released in May 2023. When I read the jacket blurb, I knew I’d have to read it since it was another story about a troubled veteran suffering from PTSD and a woman forced by circumstances to return to her hometown.

I like second-chance romance stories and that’s an element here, along with Jax’s PTSD issues. He’s isolated himself from most people except a few family members, but some old sparks ignite when Natalie returns home. Jax needs to find some forgiveness and redemption before he can move forward and that’s where Natalie comes in.

I know John Patrick McAfee from art shows where the ‘art husband’ helped his wife set up and present her work. I came to understand him better after completing a year of research on the US Army Special Forces, while creating a drawing honoring the Green Berets.

Slow Walk In a Sad Rain has been described elsewhere as the Catch-22 of the Vietnam War. The story more than lives up to the comparison. McAfee’s wry, tragic humor represents an authentic slice of the life he lived as a Special Forces medic; how he was able to move on from that experience and remain an affable, productive individual capable of sharing his multiple gifts is the greatest mystery, and a testimony to every man and woman who survived the ordeal. 

Another first-in-series story that falls squarely into the protective romance category with fierce alpha heroes and the women who win their hearts.

I love these larger-than-life heroes and Ms. Crouch effortlessly makes them believable, especially when you want to escape everyday reality. Not recommended on a regular basis, but something we all want to do at times, on holiday, at the weekend or simply after a rough day at the office.

I love the way Zac patiently and carefully rebuilds his shaky relationship with Annie. Guess I really am a sucker for the hard, in this case, very muscular frame, and the gooey center living inside the man.

When a retired army infantryman knocks down a double brick wall in the basement of his new house, he discovers a doorway and a note pinned on the other side.

Fastened by a knife, the note tells the story of a man who lost his son in this portal. He bricked it up so no one would have to suffer as he has.

Does our soldier listen? Of course not.

Alex Hawke doesn’t go through the doorway unprepared, but he is certainly not ready for what he finds.

Webb’s book is about leaders, pure and simple. The examples used throughout the book successfully frame out what a leader is and how innovation allowed these leaders to shape the future.

Leaders such as Jigoro Kano for example, developed Kodokan Judo from the Samurai’s hand-to-hand combat style of Jujitsu, which was created for self-defense purposes. Jigoro Kano had a different mindset. Jigoro Kano wanted to create a non-lethal sport, which is what we see in the Olympics today as well as many Mixed Martial Artists (MMA) that currently compete.

Jigoro Kano’s vision of “the gentle way”, for which Judo translates to, is used for recreation, health, and fitness as well as to provide law enforcement and the military a non-lethal method to deal with criminals and combatants. 

This story has gained a large following in the online dinosaur fan community. I admire it for its unapologetic brutality, which is not only reminiscent of the original Jurassic Park novel but also the horror/action films of the 1980s, such as Aliens and Predator.

The authors also clearly have a passion for military history, as the setting of the Vietnam War is well-researched and accurately represented. Despite the story not shying away from the sobering brutality of war, it does not shy away from the sci-fi angle, as the plot of Soviet scientists using time travel to bring dinosaurs to Vietnam is very much front and center as well.

This book will be adapted into a movie next year, which recently finished filming. I will likely revisit the book prior to the film’s release.

Klay, a veteran himself, writes with a moral clarity that brings home the idea that war is never just a localized conflict—it’s part of a much bigger web of power, politics, and personal ambition. The novel follows multiple perspectives, from American soldiers to Colombian civilians, each grappling with their role in the chaos.

What I found most compelling is how Klay shows the ripple effects of violence—how decisions made in one corner of the world can devastate communities thousands of miles away. This book intimates tough questions about the ethics of intervention and how far-reaching the consequences of these decisions can be.
