Book cover of Dear Billionaire Boss

Victoria Wessex Author Of The Curvy Vet and the Billionaire Cowboy

From my list on romance with curvy heroines.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m the USA Today bestselling author of nineteen romances including the He Wanted Me Pregnant! series of short, steamy, standalone reads, several of which feature curvy heroines. I believe there’s room in romance for heroes and heroines of all shapes and sizes and I love to see curvy girls find their one-and-only: someone who loves them exactly the way they are. I like my curvy heroines to be smart, witty, and have depth and I like my romances to be just the right mix of squee-inducing instalove and steamy scenes.

Victoria Wessex Why did Victoria love this book?

A confession...as a reader, sometimes I’ll pick up a book just because I love the concept. I’ll read it even if it’s not that good because I have to find out how it plays out. But in the Sincerely Yours series, we have a great concept that Lana Dash then absolutely nails with perfect execution. All the books are about curvy heroines who write secret letters to their crushes, thinking the letters will never be sent...but of course, they are and romance ensues. I think what I love most is that the hero and heroine feel real, with real emotions and inner struggles and it actually feels as if it could happen. It’s sweet and hot, good-hearted, and well worth checking out.

Muffin Top has been out for quite a while now but I still vividly remember reading it for the first time, the week of release. It was October 2016, I’d missed my train out of London and I had a full hour to wait. I grabbed a coffee and a copy of Muffin Top, which was at the top of the charts, and, sitting on a very cold platform, I got so engrossed that I very nearly missed my next train. I love the reversal here that the hero is the one running a bakery and that, although he’s former military, he’s just a big sweetie. I love the fact there’s a twist of suspense (without it detracting from the comedy and the romance) and it’s just delightfully moreish.

She walked into my bakery and my dough wasn't the only thing rising...

Long legs, a big chest, and perfect, round buns.
I'd give anything to roll with her and that adorable muffin top she's packing.

There's just one problem... and that's the Irish mob jerk who thinks he owns her.
To hell with that.

If she's gonna have a bun in her oven... it's gonna be mine.

He's a bad boy with a bakery. She's a BBW with a bar.
Muffin Top. It's a love story... with a twist!

Muffin Top is action-packed and sinfully…

The Curvy Girl Can series are short reads. Like my series, they can be read in any order and all have a guaranteed happily-ever-after. They’re a great choice to read on a lunch break, but they’re also as binge-able as a box of chocolates (nom nom nom). This first book is a great place to start but honestly, you can dive in anywhere. Layla is one of my favorites because I love the idea of the heroine’s reading cafe: who wouldn’t want a cozy place with beanbags, great coffee, and freshly-baked cookies to curl up with a book? Kane makes for a great flirty, rough hero and his chemistry with Layla will have you hooked.

Victoria Wessex Why did Victoria love this book?

Maybe it’s because I live in a city but I’m a sucker for outdoor settings both in my own books and in those I read. This book by Mia Brody pushes all the right buttons: we’ve got Crew, a prickly but good-hearted muscled lumberjack, and Maggie, a curvy bride who’s running away from a polite-language-can’t-describe-how-horrible-he-is groom. Fortunately, as she hightails it away from the arranged marriage from hell, she spins off the road and winds up stuck in a cabin with Crew in the middle of a snowstorm. It’s sweet, it’s steamy, it moves fast and it’s just the perfect read to snuggle up with when the wind’s howling outside.

Walking away from my wedding and driving into a snowstorm wasn’t my best idea.

Too bad his every touch ignites my senses.

Book cover of Swift As A Shadow

L. Dean Boswell Author Of T.A.G. …We’re it!

From my list on science fiction and fantasy with a hint of mystery.

Why am I passionate about this?

I'm a writer with a passion for telling a story. My passions for characters in a novel are anything that circumvents my ADD, and holds my attention. I don’t consider myself to be a very complex person, however, since my retirement from retail management I now not only have more time to enjoy the works of other authors, but pursue my own works as well. As an author of a sci/fi-fantasy, I’ve discovered that I not only enjoy works in my own genre, but favor those that have an air of mystery about them as well. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Avery Nolan Adventure series, Game of Thrones, and the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

L.'s book list on science fiction and fantasy with a hint of mystery

L. Dean Boswell Why did L. love this book?

The Avery Nolan Adventures series was recommended to me by my cousin, who said that she really enjoyed reading them. I believe this author to be extremely talented. I found her stories to be adventurous, mind-provoking fantasies, very much to my liking. Her characters are well defined, her stories well developed, and I find them totally relatable to my kind of genre. Hamilton’s stories reminded me of a cross between Game of Thrones and an old Irish or Scottish fairy tale set in Northern California's modern-day Lake Tahoe area. They are filled not only with adventure, but intrigue, laughter, romance, and heart-filled compassion. I loved the series and am truly looking forward to finding out if she plans to continue Avery Nolan’s adventures. Hamilton has also written a series of mysteries that are worth taking a look at.

Avery Nolan has a secret. A secret she guards fiercely.

But everyone has secrets. Her mother who draws pictures of nightmarish creatures. Her grandmother with her padlocked shed. Her student with the pale eyes and brooding father.

Leaving Sacramento after her divorce, Avery retreats to Tahoe with her golden retriever, Basil, looking for change, but as her grandmother always told her, “Be careful what you wish for.” After Basil discovers a hidden clearing with three standing stones, everything that Avery thinks she knows is suddenly upended.

Each move she makes brings her closer to a world imagined only in fairytales…

Book cover of Standing the Final Watch

Justin Oldham Author Of Showdown at the Kodiak Starport

From my list on science fiction showcasing future war scenarios.

Why am I passionate about this?

As intense as the Cold War was, I have always found myself looking toward the future. Nuclear annihilation was a real possibility in my youth. Even so, I have always been curious about the next threat beyond our current crisis would be. Beyond nuclear, biological, and chemical threats, I see that we now face possible dangers from rogue AI and climate change. If that’s not enough, let’s remember that conventional weapons are getting more powerful with the passing of each decade. That’s why the storyteller in me loves this stuff so much.

Justin Oldham Why did Justin love this book?

This is the first book in The Last Brigade series. I enjoyed the way Webb blended natural disasters with ongoing military conflicts. I’m particularly fond of the “old school” action, as well as the use of humor to keep the story moving. This is a fun romp that just happens to include tanks, artillery, and the occasional commando raid.

Book cover of The Family You Make

Janice Maynard Author Of The Runaway Bride of Blossom Branch

From my list on beach reads that make you laugh out loud and sigh at the sexy sweetness.

Why am I passionate about this?

I married my high school sweetheart, so I believe strongly in the magic and power of happily ever after. Although I wrote stories for my classmates as early as third grade, becoming a writer felt unattainable at the age of 21. As an elementary teacher, I adored my students, but the writing bug burrowed deep. Finally, I left the classroom and pursued writing full-time. It was a long road, but it has been so rewarding. My goal is to create a character-driven romance that feels real and relatable. One of the nicest comments I ever received was a reviewer who said she wanted to have dinner with my characters.

Janice Maynard Why did Janice love this book?

I have been reading Jill Shalvis for some time now. I love the depth of her characters and the realism of her storylines. But even when she is writing about tough topics, hope wins out.

In this book, the heroine is running from a difficult past, yet she yearns for permanency. Not all birth families are perfect. Jill’s book underscores the value of the families we choose.

And did I mention that the book is funny? From tears to laughter and back again. Gets me every time.

Book cover of Carol and John Steinbeck: Portrait of a Marriage

Liz Heinecke Author Of Radiant: The Dancer, the Scientist, and a Friendship Forged in Light

From my list on meeting fascinating historical figures.

Why am I passionate about this?

I adore non-fiction books that read like novels. After ten years of working in research labs, my master’s degree in biology led me to a new career in science writing. I recently dove into the worlds of narrative non-fiction and history when I wrote Radiant, the Dancer, The Scientist and a Friendship Forged in Light. Immersing myself in Belle Époque Paris to research and intertwine the stories of Marie Curie and the inventor/dancer Loie Fuller helped me discover a passion for telling the stories of important figures forgotten by history.

Liz Heinecke Why did Liz love this book?

In Portrait of a Marriage, Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw beautifully brings John Steinbeck’s first wife Carol into the spotlight. The impeccably researched narrative lays out the path of a ten-year marriage doomed to fail, even as Carol shapes John into one of America’s great writers. I couldn’t put it down.

What is this book about?

Carol Henning Steinbeck, writer John Steinbeck's first wife, was his creative anchor, the inspiration for his great work of the 1930s, culminating in The Grapes of Wrath. When they met at Lake Tahoe in 1928, their attachment was immediate, their personalities meshing in creative synergy. Carol was unconventional, artistic, and compelling. During the formative years of Steinbeck's career, when they lived in San Francisco, Pacific Grove, and Los Gatos, their modernist circle included Ed Ricketts, Joseph Campbell, and Lincoln Steffens. In many ways Carol's story is all too familiar: a creative and intelligent woman subsumes her own life and work…

Book cover of Tahoe Deathfall

Tammy L. Grace Author Of Cold Killer

From my list on mysteries with dogs.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always loved mysteries and puzzles and have been an avid mystery reader since devouring all the Nancy Drew books at our library. There’s such satisfaction that comes from solving a mystery. When I started writing, my faithful golden retriever was always resting at my feet. She was the inspiration and the reason I chose to include dogs in all my books. Having a dog alongside my character allows me to show more depth in the humans in my stories and reveal weaknesses and vulnerabilities they may not be able to show others. I hope you enjoy my top picks as much as I have.

Todd Borg is a “local” author living not far from me and I had the chance to meet him in person when we were both invited to an author event at a local library. My mom is one of his biggest fans and was delighted to meet him. His books feature a retired detective and his huge Great Dane, Spot. They all take place in familiar settings for me, near Lake Tahoe, where Borg makes his home.

It’s always fun to read about one of your favorite places you know and having the bonus of intriguing mysteries makes it all the better.

Book cover of Midnight Reckoning

Leah St. James Author Of Adrienne's Ghost

From my list on series that should be made into movies or TV shows.

Why am I passionate about this?

Aside from reading (preferably at the beach), one of my favorite pastimes is watching movies or TV with my husband. We enjoy analyzing plots and talking about what we do or don’t like, what surprised us, or how we might have handled a scene differently. It seems the better ones are most often based on novels, usually with strong, well-developed characters, emotional punch, interesting settings, and/or hard-to-guess plot twists. This is my list of stories I think are strong in those characteristics and would make great movies or TV shows/series.

Leah St. James Why did Leah love this book?

One thing I look for in my “screen” entertainment is a fascinating location. This story takes place in Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. I’ve never been to either, but both are described so well in this book, I feel like I might have visited at some point. The story follows Raine Endicott, Levi Hill, and several other members of their former college hiking club through a 60-mile, four-day trek through the national park. When one of the members is found dead, the danger for our couple starts. While suspensefully leading the reader through the murder investigation, the author weaves in details of outdoor life—like coming upon bears on the trail—and paints a vivid picture of the beauty and majesty of the settings.

If the Yosemite backpacking trip doesn’t kill them . . . someone they trust just might.

Reuniting members of their college hiking club, Leave No Trace, in Yosemite National Park to raise money for a wildlife charity seems like a terrific idea to Raine Endicott. She needs time away from her dead-end job in San Francisco to reassess her future, escape from the city, and enjoy nature’s splendor. Connecting with old friends is a bonus . . . especially Levi Hill, the man she turned down all those years ago. A decision she lived to regret.

For Levi, seeing Raine…
