Mid-life for women is many things, including greatly underrepresented in the stories around us. I am forever in awe of the women around me as they continue to rise to each crazy occasion that life presents, managing and coping with wisdom, humor, and strength. I am a fan of Nora Ephron’s films (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, Julie/Julia…, etc.), but I hadn’t read any of her books. I started with this one—a slim one, as I remembered the movie from years ago.
Our protagonist, Rachael Samstat, seems to have an enviable life: a successful career as a cookbook writer, happily married to a dynamic man, a baby with another on the way, and a calendar of social events with equally lucky people. However, her husband’s betrayal while she is pregnant sends her spinning and onto a painful, witty, sometimes petty, and ultimately empowering journey.
I listened to the book, and Meryl Streep’s narration is relatable. It made me laugh out loud numerous times.

I found this book to be an excellent, well-crafted mystery, but what put it on my best books list was Chet, the four-legged narrator. He’s not an entirely reliable narrator, but the reader can count on his doggy behaviors to be consistently reliable as he serves as his owner’s faithful sleuthing sidekick.
Just as Chet has a nose for sniffing out trouble, he also has a nose for Slim Jims, burgers, and the other dogs (his tribe members) in the neighborhood, and can be easily distracted. This keeps the story light and delightfully entertaining. I was charmed from page one.

Years ago, a fellow writer recommended the Stephanie Plum series to me as a must-read because the writing was so laugh-out-loud funny. She wasn’t kidding. Not only did I find this incredibly entertaining, I laughed all the way through the book and became a huge fan of the series.
Hanging out in the Jersey “burg” with Stephanie and her family, for me, is just plain fun. This is the third book in Roberts’s Bride Quartet series about four women who run a wedding and event center. But the heroine here is Laurel McBane, creator of sublime cakes, candies, and pastries for both weddings and hungry friends. The plot is charming (it’s Roberts in romance rather than thriller mode), and the cake descriptions are mouth-watering.
The entire quartet is a great example of contemporary romance, and I recommend them all. But it’s Savor the Moment that will have you dreaming of butter cream frosting.

Sunshine Vicram is the kind of protagonist I absolutely love. She’s smart, funny, and perfectly (or imperfectly) capable of taking care of herself while coming to terms with the situation she’s found herself in: Sunshine’s the newly elected sheriff in town–quite an interesting development considering that she never ran for the position. It’s her parents’ doing to lure her back home.
Sure, Sun recognizes this as the complete manipulation it is, but the position affords her the opportunity to solve a mystery from her past. And so this book begins with this great set-up. I knew from page one that I’d love it. The writing is clever and snappy, and the story is laced with wonderfully snarky humor. I was so entertained that I immediately ordered books two and three in the series!

I may be a writer of psychological dramas, but I am first and foremost an avid reader who is addicted to books. My go-to genre is the psychological thriller, but I also love any books that use light and shade, balancing humour and darkness, inverting stereotypes, and generally keeping me guessing on plot twists and turns. All of the books I have recommended would keep you warm and cosy – and certainly distracted – on an autumnal evening when the nights are long and cold.
This is an exceptional crime novel. The characters are rich and unforgettable—Duchess and Thomas Noble will stay with me for a very long time. It is also beautifully written—nothing is unnecessary and every word has a purpose. I cried, I laughed and above all I rooted for them. One of those books I wish I'd written myself. A must-read.
