Autobiography of a Yogi

By Paramahansa Yogananda,

Book cover of Autobiography of a Yogi

Kathryn E. Livingston Author Of Yin, Yang, Yogini: A Woman's Quest for Balance, Strength and Inner Peace

From the list on yoga memoirs to inspire you on your path.

Who am I?

Nearly 20 years ago, I awkwardly stumbled into a yoga class after a therapist informed me that I needed to do something about my anxiety issues (“Take your pick,” she said, “I’ll prescribe pills or you can try yoga.”) From the very first class, I was drawn not only to the physical practice, but to the sense that yoga could lead me deeper into my own heart and soul. I wrote a memoir about my journey—and about how yoga helped me later face and conquer breast cancer. I now teach yoga, and I love reading about how yoga changes lives—as it almost always does.

Why did Kathryn love this book?

One can’t put together a yoga memoir list without including this classic. So much has been written about it (including that it was George Harrison’s favorite book) but I’ll add my two cents, which is that this memoir helps one believe that there’s a greater force, source, being, or something out there orchestrating some of the uncanny stuff we meet up with in our lives. Yogananda was a revered spiritual teacher, but he was also a human being. When he couldn’t be with his mother at her death, he writes that the “Intervening Hand” arranged his absence because his presence would have been too painful to bear, a profound sharing that helped me face my own guilt about a similar experience. His story is wild, crazy, and so unbelievable that it makes you believe.

Who am I?

As a thirty-year meditator, certified meditation leader, and award-winning author, it’s my job to keep up on the latest books about mindfulness and Zen practice. Despite seeing new volumes being published regularly, I return to these books as great sources of solid practice information. Each of these authors explains meditation in accessible terms, easy for readers to follow and understand. I can’t remember who said that a confused reader is an antagonistic reader, but they are right. The books I’ve suggested offer clarity. They help readers begin or continue their practice and understand how and why meditation is worth their time.

Book cover of You Can Heal Your Life

Kathy Caprino Author Of The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss

From the list on transforming your understanding of yourself.

Who am I?

I’ve been fascinated since childhood about what makes people tick and why they do what they do. Instead of leveraging that keen passion, I spent 18 years engaged in forms of corporate marketing work that often felt wrong for me, with people I found it difficult to connect with, pursuing outcomes that didn’t feel contributive in the world. Finally, after age 40, I found a new path as a therapist and later, as a career and leadership coach and educator for 16+ years. As a writer of two non-fiction books, numerous blogs, and hosting my own podcast, I’m grateful to be able to help others pursue what matters deeply to them.

Why did Kathy love this book?

I found this amazing book at a time when I had just experienced a very emotionally difficult layoff from my VP corporate role and decided that “Enough is enough!” and it was time to transform my career and life.

I had been experiencing serious chronic illness in the form of debilitating infections of my trachea every four months for 2 years, and medical doctors just couldn’t find the root cause or cure. I began to explore alternative approaches to healing and found Louise’s book groundbreaking for me.

I later studied various forms of energy healing as well as psychotherapy, and pursued understanding how “the body says what the lips cannot.” I have a deeper understanding now of the ways in which our bodies share essential spiritual and emotional messages with us, that are often communicated through physical challenges and chronic ailments.

I’ve been interested in psychological health since I was in high school and continue to search for interventions and preventions to alleviate mental illness and build mental health. I’m a licensed psychologist and coach focusing on evidenced based treatments, with a special interest in how people connect and the impact of loneliness. Despite a growing population, more people are feeling lonely, including adolescents, and loneliness can often be a root cause of mental suffering. Loneliness is common among individuals with anorexia and other eating disorders as well as chronic depression. Addressing how to connect and how they may be blocking connections can be a complicated but needed process. My work is focused in this area.

Book cover of How You Stand, How You Move, How You Live: Learning the Alexander Technique to Explore Your Mind-Body Connection and Achieve Self-Mastery

E.J. Lamprey Author Of The Christmas Caper

From the list on getting older with style and panache.

Who am I?

I’ve been a columnist in a national magazine, book reviewer on a daily newspaper, journalist on a small rural paper, commercial blogger for hire, copy-editor, and critiquer, usually alongside more conventional roles in the not entirely thrilling world of corporate finance. In my fifties, I took a belated gap year courtesy of a good redundancy package and started writing full-time under a couple of different names, mainly EJ Lamprey but here as Clarissa. The gap year never really ended . . . At the heart of all my books is the exuberant celebration of finding in autumn the best season of our lives.

Why did E.J. love this book?

I actually believe the Alexander technique should be taught in schools from the start, to become a lifelong habit to improve lifelong health, but it’s never too late to start. While there’s no denying it is best taught hands-on, there aren’t enough teachers out there. There are many books but this one has a lovely holistic approach. Even better, if you’re lucky enough to have a practitioner within reach, the book adds to your understanding and to the benefit of your sessions. Win, win.
