When I was a kid growing up in Canada, many of my classmates didn’t know about Korea. I was sucked in by this sweet, fluffy reimagining of The Little Mermaid with its delightful cast and thoughtful slow-burn romance. Is it Disney IP? Yes. Does it reference a not-so-subtle number of Disney properties? Absolutely, but the found family bonding on a rock tour was kind-hearted and hopeful.

I love reading about pop culture history and this was a technicolor burst of educational joy.

I remember staying up long past my bedtime as a child, reading because I just had to know what happened. This is one of those books that’s hard to talk about without giving too much away because the magic is in the twists and turns. At a certain point in reading, I closed the book, letting out a little “oh no” because I’d just realized what was coming, and I was both dreading it happening and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to get to that scene.

I’m a strong advocate for literacy and reaching reluctant readers, and the author of the multi-award-nominated middle-grade mystery Daybreak on Raven Island and Midnight at the Barclay Hotel, among others.
