Hello! I am Jane Yolen, author of almost 450 books. I write picture books and novels, poetry, and graphic novels–mostly for children. I have published books about just about every subject imaginable. But I’ve always loved fantasy books especially. I grew up on the Alice in Wonderland books and the Arthurian legends. I loved this book because Amos McGee was such a kind, wonderful man. When he got sick, it warmed my heart to see that the love he gave was returned to him. I really liked the illustrations, too.
Some of the story is told in wordless pages of art. I felt that the book worked well to teach children as young as two about compassion and empathy. Also, I think they’re young enough to absolutely accept all the fantasy of talking animals.

I must have read this book aloud to children at least fifty times, and I never got tired of reading it. The words have such a wonderful cadence to them. The children will get caught up in the rhythm and rhyme.

First of all, it’s part of the Piggie and Elephant series, and I think the whole series is wonderful. I am in awe of how Willems can use so few words and still create stories that are funny and poignant. I particularly like this book because Elephant is sad, and no matter what outrageous things Piggie does, Elephant remains sad.
However, what the book shows in the end is that it is Piggie’s friendship that makes the difference. What a great lesson for kids to see that simply being a good friend is an act of great kindness.
