Loretta Chase presents a thoroughly entertaining Beauty and the Beast story in Lord of Scoundrels, book three of her Scoundrels series. Miss Jessica Trent attempts to negotiate with the Marquess of Dain in order to extract her idiot brother from Dain’s unhealthy influence. But Dain dislikes the species known as “ladies” and trusts them even less. He offers Jessica his own self-serving terms, which she roundly rejects. They’re horribly attracted to one another, which Dain refuses to acknowledge, and Jessica knows is the road to ruin. Experiencing this big, powerful, beastly man’s taming at the hands of a small, beautiful, fiercely intelligent woman is delightful. Their dialogue and banter are stellar and their constant battles a thing of beauty. Truly, one of the best Regency’s out there.  

Romance with a side of attempted murder, anyone?

When I read a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book, I am immediately dropped in the middle of an intangible situation and this book delivers, over and over. Dean Robilard and Blue Bailey are two scared children living in adult bodies, and hiding within the confines of their complicated lives, and pasts marred by trauma.

I love messy characters trying and failing at life because their transformation is so satisfying. I always wonder, “How the hell are they going to get out of this?” The music element, this time in rock and roll, again shows the intricacies of the business and the effect it has on the characters' personal lives when trying to build a career and find love.

Quinn’s famous for her Bridgerton series, but this two-book set is among my favorites. Possibly because it closely relates to mine in that the two stories are happening simultaneously. Coincidentally, our heroes are both named Jack, and both Jacks are rogues and daredevils with a wicked sense of humor. The Lost Duke is about a long-lost cousin who may be the legitimate Wyndham heir (the second book deals with the current Wyndham heir). Jack is a highwayman who meets our heroine, Grace, and his possible grandmother, the dowager duchess, when he robs their coach. Quinn’s delightful characters always entertain and wicked Jack wooing the grandmother’s companion right under her nose while rejecting his questionable birthright is a delight.

This is book two in Hovland’s Mile High Matched series. Florist Jase Dvornakov cons cookie baker Heather Reese into pretending she broke his heart so his matchmaking family will give him space while he “heals.” Unfortunately, Jake’s manipulative Russian Grandmother—Babushka—is out for revenge and Heather is in her crosshairs. Between Heather’s naughty-shaped cookies, an interfering Babushka, and her frustrated grandson, this story is a hoot. Once Heather and Babushka team up, it’s all over for poor Jake. It’s not just the couple’s relationship issues, but their close friendships that make the story so engaging. I laughed out loud—a lot. Babushka makes appearances throughout the series and all the stories are great, but for the humor factor, this one is my fave.

Published in one volume, The Furies Series is perhaps the best example of mechsuited combat in the known ‘verse. Vengeance, planet-wrecking pirates, and a death-to-life story that nearly defies description. The read is frenetic, and the weapons and AIs are the best in the business. Of course, the author, David Weber, is one of the great ones. He’s a rare talent, and his penchant for penning war is unrivaled, save perhaps for Patrick O'Brian’s outstanding wet navy fiction. You’re welcome. 

This book by a Kentucky journalist, based on the sparse court records and on interviews with descendants of the feudists, helped me understand that the Hatfield-McCoy feud was not an isolated occurrence. In addition to the Hatfield-McCoy feud, it describes five other feuds being conducted in Kentucky at the same time. There appear to be similar patterns governing the combustion and ferocity of all these feuds, having to do with a struggle for control over the shifting social, economic, and political hierarchies following the upheavals of the Civil War and the invasions launched by lumber and coal companies.

I found The Moon-Spiners through a Disney movie of the same name (book was better). When I found out it was also a book, I went hunting at my local library and fell in love with the way Stewart immediately pulled me into her stories, evoking awe, fear, laughter ,and romance. She wafted me away to exotic places, and into exciting and romantic adventures with strong female characters. I went on to read all her books, even the Arthurian ones, but her romantic suspense books remain my favorites and the ones I turn to when I need a comfortable visit with old fictional friends. 

This book was one of the first queer graphic novels I read outside of manga, and it’s still one of my favorites. I love magical monsters and characters forced to make morally grey decisions.

It’s also amazing how science is weaved into magic; I never knew exactly what would happen next. While the movie adaptation is also wonderful, the book will always hold a special place in my heart.

Okay, this is an old-fashioned book with some old-fashioned views, but it was my childhood favorite, so I had to include it! Orphaned Maria is sent to live with a distant relative at Moonacre Manor, but all is not as perfect as it seems, and it isn’t long before Maria discovers a world of hidden secrets and ancient feuds. It can’t have been easy growing up a feisty girl in Victorian England, but Maria Merryweather manages it, and I love that about her. She is stubborn, brave, and inquisitive, refusing to let anything dampen her spirit. As well as a passion for life Maria also has a passion for good food, (like me) so eat a snack while you read this because the descriptions will make you hungry!  A perfect balance of mystery, magic, and teatime treats.

There simply aren’t enough romances that focus on older main characters, so I particularly loved that this funny, Shakespeare-inspired love story had a 60-year-old divorced heroine and an equally mature widower hero. The protagonists are rival florists in Boston, and their families have been embroiled in a feud that has spanned several generations. Watching the way this novel played out—especially with so many meddling family members!—was great fun. And if, like me, you always wished the original Romeo and Juliet could have, maybe, been transformed into a comedy with a happier ending, Jeanne Ray’s light, modern romance just might be for you.
