I love learning how people lived in other times via historical fiction, and Cadfael, a Benedictine monk who practiced healing arts in England in the 1100s, is one of my favorite characters.
I like hearing his opinions about the civil war that raged at that time and the church’s role in it. I like the fact that he’s a bit of a maverick who pushes beyond the bounds of his role as a monk to solve mysteries.

I’m Julia Buckley, a passionate lifelong reader, English teacher, and mystery writer. I gravitated toward mystery as a child when my mom read all the greats of 20th Century Mystery and Romantic Suspense and then passed them on to me. When I became an English teacher, I had the privilege of teaching some of the great Gothic classics like Jane Eyre, Rebecca, and The Castle of Otranto. I love to travel, and when I’m at home, I love to read about places I’ve been or hope to visit. When I was 27, I thought it would be fun to write. I have no formal training, yet I have found success through reading exposure and trial and error for 30 years. Changing my voice was hard, but reading these books helped me define the kind of story I wanted to tell in my new novel, Missed Connection. Erotic thrillers truly are a guilty pleasure for me.
Witty writing is important to me both as a writer and a reader, and Palahniuk’s prose is sharp, aggressive, and biting, with more wit than most writers know what to do with. It’s a hard feat as a writer to be witty and aggressive and still maintain the flow of the story, and Palahniuk does it over and over, with this book being a stand out for me.

As an author of experimental and genre-bending books, I evangelize people not only to read more books but to read books outside of their comfort zone. And while it doesn’t take much work to get adult readers to consider Young Adult titles, getting them to read Middle-Grade books has been a much greater challenge, which is a shame because middle school has a lot to offer. Some of the best and most life-changing books exist within the Middle-Grade category. My own Middle-Grade books were written with readers of many age ranges in mind.
This book may have been written for children, but specifically for children who have the mind of an adult.
I loved every word of this book, and as an adult, I appreciate it far more than I could have if I had read it as a child. The humor is classic Dave-Barry-style dad humor dialed up to eleven, except delivered in the form of a universally appreciable fairy tale.
I also find it to be the most compelling retelling of Peter Pan (and there have been many others). It gives a coherent origin to Peter, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, and even Neverland itself, breathing new life into an old story. Little wonder it was adapted into a Broadway stage show.

This is super funny, and I love laughing over Mr. Nogginbody’s discoveries. I also love a book that my grandkids will go get off the bookshelf and ask me to read to them–again.
David Shannon gives us a chance to ham it up with, “Fixed it!” And I’m totally into a picture book that reminds us of life’s great truths–in this case, that not all problems are nails, so a hammer won’t be the best way to fix everything!
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. After snagging his toe, Mr Nogginbody visits his local hardware shop in search of solutions. I love the clever rhymes and hilarious antics in the Pig the Pug books, especially this one. This Halloween-themed story is fun to read over and over again. My sons get the biggest kick out of how naughty Pig the Pug behaves when he confronts the unsuspecting grownups who cross him on Halloween night. (My favorite line might be, “It filled him with feelings that had to be vented.”)
Ultimately, the story teaches kids good manners in the cleverest way by showing how monstrous Pig’s own manners are on Halloween night and the consequences of those actions. (Spoiler alert: the ending involves an upset tummy with disastrous results!)
