Why am I passionate about this?

I can't be the only one to see men with power manipulate their status to hold back others. This isn’t just a Hollywood thing. A Sunday supplement piece by a young gay actor about his troubled life with a leading director struck a chord. Fate led me to him, and he connected me with others who shared off-the-record stories of exploitation and ambition. I wanted to tell these tales but not launch yet another bad news book into an already battered world. I aimed to create something accessible and engaging, darkly funny while shining a light on Hollywood's underbelly.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Good Material

Mo Fanning Why did I love this book?

I really loved this book for its unfiltered look into the often funny life of a man navigating the worlds of stand-up comedy and personal mishaps, all within the backdrop of Birmingham–a city that doesn't feature in enough bestselling books.

The book took me back to cringeworthy ‘open mic’ comedy nights, performing for a share of ‘the bucket’, which rarely covered a pint at city centre prices. Loser Andy adores lovely Jen… but Jen has had her fill of Andy. The only problem is she can’t explain why, and that’s not enough for him.

Despite a series of truly dick moves, my heart remained with Good Material’s anti-hero. But what impressed me most was how Alderton chose to end the story–avoiding every cliché and delivering something far more sharply satisfying than a ‘happy ever after.’

Book cover of None of This is True

Mo Fanning Why did I love this book?

I’ve read other books by Lisa Jewell, but none as all-involving as this one. The story had me hooked from the word go, and the audiobook production quality was outstanding, with ‘Netflix Coming Soon’ trailers helping ground events in the everyday.

There are so many twists and turns that I defy anyone to claim they saw the ending coming. Jewell gets under the skin of a downtrodden wannabe whose life is a literal mess and her birthday twin–a woman who seemingly has it all. Spoiler alert (natch): she doesn’t.

Mo Fanning Why did I love this book?

This book blew me away. He gets under the skin of ordinary folk like no other writer today. The story of a hostage situation that may or may not have happened made me laugh. It actually managed to make me cry–and I’m notoriously made of stone.

Through accessible writing, Backman showcases an unparalleled talent for exploring the complexities of human nature. His imperfect characters each carry their own sort of sorrow and flicker of hope. It’s one of those books I go back to. Again and again.

After 608 days, Maggie is single again and almost 30–two things that give cause for concern and reflection. Thankfully, Maggie takes no blame for either thing happening and plows on, determined to find the pearl in the gritty oyster her life has become.

I laughed, but I also found myself filled with sad recognition of how we all too often set goals we’ll never score, only to find that halfway home is where the heart is.

Book cover of The Satsuma Complex

Mo Fanning Why did I love this book?

I’ve spoken to people who really couldn’t get into this book, and I consider them somewhat deranged. It’s a rollicking good read, and maybe it helped that I enjoyed the author reading the story, which added to my enjoyment. I’ll go out on a limb and suggest very few authors make great audiobook performers. Mortimer absolutely does, getting the voice of the squirrel spot on.

There’s a strange and convoluted plot set in the not-terribly-underworld of London. A brilliant neighbor part for Kathy Burke should Mortimer ever be fielding Netflix offers. It’s a book you’ll read in days, not weeks. Fast-paced and has me on edge for part two–out in August.
