Ty'Ron W. C. Robinson II Why did Ty'Ron love this book?

I liked this book for the most part due to its connection to the Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Assassin's Creed Mirage video games. This book filled in the gaps between the two games and added to the stories of Basim Ibn Ishaq and his apprentice/main character of the book, Hytham through their journey in Constantinople.

The book showcases their relationship within the Assassin's Brotherhood and even plants the seeds regarding Basim's true nature and Hytham eventual discovery of his mentor's honest desire.

Jeffrey Bennett Author Of A Global Warming Primer: Pathway to a Post-Global Warming Future

From my list on the science, consequences, and solutions to global warming.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am an astronomer and educator (Ph.D. Astrophysics, University of Colorado), and Iā€™ve now been teaching about global warming for more than 40 years (in courses on astronomy, astrobiology, and mathematics). While itā€™s frustrating to see how little progress weā€™ve made in combatting the ongoing warming during this time, my background as an astronomer gives me a ā€œcosmic perspectiveā€ that reminds me that decades are not really so long, and that we still have time to act and to build a ā€œpost-global warming future.ā€ I hope my work can help inspire all of us to act while we still can for the benefit of all.

Jeffrey's book list on the science, consequences, and solutions to global warming

Jeffrey Bennett Why did Jeffrey love this book?

This is a science fiction book and hence might seem an odd choice for a list of books about global warming.

However, this book does a great job describing what might happen in coming decades if we donā€™t take rapid action on climate change, so I think it can help inspire people to make sure that we do indeed act soon. I also loved the way the book shows how exploration of space can be part of the long-term solution to climate change, something that I also deeply believe in.

VL McBeath Why did VL love this book?

This book didnā€™t mess around. It was straight into the action, and I loved the tension as it built up in the first chapter. It clearly signalled it was going to be a roller coaster of a book ā€¦ and it didnā€™t disappoint. Just as one high-action scene ended, another started with barely a pause for breath!

I particularly liked that the main character (Eden) was a highly competent, self-sufficient woman, prepared to risk everything to get to the truth. The strength of her convictions had me rooting for her from the word go.

I loved that the book never shied away from the action scenes and the twist at the end was as intriguing as it was poignant.

I loved this book because, as always, Iā€™ve come to expect amazing writing from Gregg Hurwitz. He mixes action prose with beautifully drawn scenes in a rare combination of accuracy and emotion.

This is the eighth book in the Orphan X series, and it still delivers great intrigue, heartfelt moments, life questions, and the quirky but deadly protagonist Evan Smoak. I like how Evan evolves from an elite assassin and the choices he has to make in a hard double life. Side characters like Candy are fun to root for.

Joey, Evanā€™s ā€œadoptedā€ daughter, makes the perfect companion for Evan, and the real family moments they share make the book have such heart that itā€™s very relatable.

I read this book because I loved Fire Keeperā€™s Daughter. Boulleyā€™s writing is gripping. Her characters are fully realized, and her fast-moving plots are unpredictable.

I have a middle-grade novel in production that is about my great-grandfather (Dakota/Ojibwe ancestry, born and raised in the Minnesota territory). While writing the book, I read every middle-grade and YA novel I could find by native writers.

This YA novel told a great story and told it well. It was good to catch up with the characters from Fire Keeperā€™s Daughter and learn more about the protagonist, Perryā€”a great character with a strongly rendered personality.

I love a book set in a work setting, especially as Iā€™m a full-time author, so I no longer have dodgy colleagues! The Flatmate follows Ria, who has returned to work following an enforced sabbatical after the shocking death of her colleague and best friend, Livvy.

This is a masterclass in tension building. With a nod to Edgar Allan Poe and the early 1970s books of Crichton, Tryon and Levin, Koontz develops the character Katie who lives alone on a lighthouse coming to terms with a tragedy. The nearby island of Ringrock, she discovers is home to a government research facility and something over there has gone very wrong.

Koontz is a wonderful writer and a great observer of character. He keeps a tight reign on the plot and the jump scares when they come are well executed.

As good as King on a good day, I would recommend this excellent book - the characters, particularly Katie and Libby are fully realised and deal with the unfolding crisis and its aftermath plausibly.

Ranger lit is the best. (I spend half the year working as a seasonal in one of the last great wildernesses of the east.) And I tend to really like Peter Heller's stuff - The River ranks among the finest novels of the past decade - so I was predisposed to enjoy this title. It isn't his best work, but it's a very compelling read nonetheless, following enforcement ranger Ren Hooper around Yellowstone, seeing the park through his eyes. (As a park ranger, he rings true.) A good, page-turning tale of our uneasy relationship with wild places.
