My favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Way of Kings

E.A. Field Why did I love this book?

I loved The Way of Kings because it was an epic fantasy that didn’t quite start out as one.

I found the characters intriguing, the world-building immaculately detailed, and I connected to even the side characters. I liked the way I was thinking one thing about a character, but the author sort of flipped it, and you went along with the story. It all comes together, and the adventure is so worth the long read! It really didn’t even.

For me, a book that holds my attention so well and makes me dream about the world despite all the chaos in my own life is worth gold. It was a great escape that I’m glad lives on in four other books!

What is this book about?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, Book One of the Stormlight Archive begins an incredible new saga of epic proportion.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Last Orphan

E.A. Field Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because, as always, I’ve come to expect amazing writing from Gregg Hurwitz. He mixes action prose with beautifully drawn scenes in a rare combination of accuracy and emotion.

This is the eighth book in the Orphan X series, and it still delivers great intrigue, heartfelt moments, life questions, and the quirky but deadly protagonist Evan Smoak. I like how Evan evolves from an elite assassin and the choices he has to make in a hard double life. Side characters like Candy are fun to root for.

Joey, Evan’s “adopted” daughter, makes the perfect companion for Evan, and the real family moments they share make the book have such heart that it’s very relatable.

What is this book about?

A heavily-armed counter-assault team, sedatives strong enough for large animals, a hood, mouthguard and Secret Service Agents asking for selfies.

Not your average meeting with the President.

But Orphan X is not your average guest. The last survivor of the off-the-books Orphan programme, Evan was trained to do his government's dirty work. Until he escaped.

Now the President makes an offer: kill a man, or be executed.

Evan spent years atoning for his former life. If this mission betrays the very principles he now follows, what is left?

Putting Orphan X in an impossible spot only makes him more dangerous...

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Code Red

E.A. Field Why did I love this book?

I always anticipate Kyle Mills’ books and his portrayal of Vince Flynn’s iconic character Mitch Rapp. This time around, I knew it was his last, as the torch was being passed to Don Bentley for future Rapp adventures.

Code Red did not disappoint, with most of the book being from Mitch’s perspective, which I loved. It delivers all the thrills with real-life commentary. Mitch is a character that grows, and I always find something to connect with, even if my own life doesn’t even come close to mirroring his.

I remember in a previous book, Oath of Loyalty, that Mitch had to ask a favor of a crime lord, and in Code Red, that favor gets called in. I liked the tension in between the action, and I’ll be curious to see where Mitch Rapp goes from here!

What is this book about?

Mitch Rapp returns to make a mortal enemy of Russia in this high-octane and up-to-the-minute installment in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from “one of the best thriller writers on the planet” (The Real Book Spy).

Mitch Rapp hates owing anyone a favor—especially when it’s the world’s most powerful crime lord. But when Damian Losa calls, Mitch is honor-bound to answer.

The Syrian government appears to have created a highly addictive new narcotic that it plans to distribute throughout Europe. It’s a major threat to Losa’s business and he’s determined to send someone to keep him on top…
