Something is wrong in Bunker, Illinois.

Nora Grace Moon thought her toughest challenge this semester would be managing her OCD, but when her deceased roommate turns up as a reanimated corpse, her world starts to collapse.

When her uncle sends her a cryptic message, Nora realizes it must be a call for help. She reaches out to fellow gamer Wesley for advice, a US Marshal with real-life skills for tactical survival, not just in-game. They venture out into a world that is growing more and more deadly by the moment—not only are the undead spreading, but other humans are taking advantage of the societal breakdown. And unknown to Nora and Wesley, they have been targeted by an ancient archeological society who will stop at nothing until they have what Nora has: an artifact that will unleash a new world order of the undead.

IRL is a paranormal thriller about leaving the online world and dealing with things "In Real Life."

I received this book as a gift from my wife. She thought it sounded like the merging of two of my favorite things, the undead and gaming.I was surprised how easy the book was to get into. The protagonist is a college aged female with functioning OCD. That is not typically a character I would identify with. Nora is witty, brave and really pushes the story along with her constant character growth. The story is fast paced and filled with action. There is also a love story if you are into that thing.I hoping for a sequel that really gets into the antiquarians.

This book hooked me in within the first few pages. The author knows how to end each chapter in a way that I couldn't resist turning the page to see what's in store. I fell in love with a lot of the characters. Some authors/scriptwriters when having a plot that involves Africa, rarely mention specific countries or parts of the continent. BUT the way E.A. Field tied certain historical events in the novel and used a country that I may have connections to was *chef's kiss*. My only critique would be that there are a vast array of languages from each country and it would have added a bit more depth to mention the use of Bambara, Dogon, or other languages. I can tell a lot of research was done for this book and thoroughly enjoyed that. The protagonists and the dose of romance was very refreshing. I could go on and on about the awesome things of IRL, but I fear that this review would become a novel. 10/10, would recommend to fantasy/Sci-fi book lovers!

IRL was a wonderful spin on a zombie story, fresh and modern. The heart of the book was the interaction between two people who had already seen too much... long before the undead start attacking. The book explored deep themes of loss, anxiety, and trauma and gave life to two nuanced, unlikely heroes. The interweaving of modern gaming and ancient myths, internal struggles and an impending apocalypse will keep you hooked until the end.

While zombie apocalypse stories may be a dime a dozen at this point, "IRL" stands out as one of the most entertaining and imaginative takes I've seen in recent memory! This is mostly because of the unique vision of said apocalypse, which combines classic and contemporary zombie mythology with literal mythology, magic, and even some Lovecraftian cosmic horror vibes. In addition, the characters easily carry the story with witty banter, compelling emotional arcs, and of course some suitably spicy romance. Another added twist is the fact that the characters in question are gamers who have formed an online relationship but have never met "in real life," causing tension and uncertainty as they try to figure out how much of what they know about each other is real vs. fiction. Perhaps if I were more of a gamer I would have latched onto this dynamic a bit more...as it was, some of the references lost me a bit and I didn't necessarily get what their being gamers had to do with the overall story. But that small quibble aside, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who likes zombie stories, apocalypse drama, and fun, easy to root for characters!

I bought this book after my husband and I came off a Walking Dead bender- watching the whole thing season by season non-stop. After being accustomed to a typical zombie thriller, IRL was a really unexpected zombie apocalypse twist that wasn’t what I was expecting. In the best way- Wesley is my new crush! I am not a gamer, and I thought the book was awesome.

Once I started reading this incredible book, I absolutely could not put it down and I had no idea what was going to happen next. But it isn’t just the plot that I loved because the story line is certainly deeper than that. It is about a young woman filled with doubts and uncertainty come into her own, learning through incredible odds to trust, love, and gain self-confidence. Great reading!
