A colleague of mine introduced me to this book and argued that Kouzes and Posner wrote the gold standard of leadership practices. After reading their research-based stories, I agree.

The authors write in a way that goes beyond theory by offering a practical guide by focusing on the five practices of exemplary leadership. These practices are applicable to anyone’s career! Through inspiring examples and actionable steps, I learned how to lead with integrity, inspire others, and drive higher performance more effectively.

Bennis and Tichy are giants in the development of management thought and practice. Their book makes a fundamental point. You can have all the skills and experience in the world, but if you can’t display sound judgment on the big decisions, you ultimately won’t succeed.

What I find most useful about this book is the way they encourage the senior leader to start by framing an issue or decision and then using that framing to create the best decision-making process as well as bring in the right people to contribute.

Ah, there is nothing more quintessentially freelance than riding the highs and lows.

Some months, clients are stampeding to work with you and other months you pitch your projects to a resounding chorus of crickets. This book about thriving in uncertainty helped me ground myself in moments of transition (a.k.a. always).

It also helped me understand that the more unique my career was, the better, because it helps me differentiate myself from the pack. Plus the book reads like a warm hug, and that’s exactly what you want when, well, everything is in flux. 

Adult development theory is, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating and encouraging ideas out there.

In a nutshell, it suggests that (contrary to popular belief) our brains are not “finished products” by the time we turn 25 or so.

As Berger shows so beautifully in this book, people of any age can acquire new skills or adopt new habits, so long as they have the right guidance and tools at their disposal. And, as you might’ve guessed, this book is full of both. 

Prof Useem, who teaches leadership at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, sent me a signed copy of this book through my spouse (a Wharton alum) and I cannot recommend it enough.

He eloquently equates a leader’s job to standing on the cliff edge, getting a grip on unfamiliar landscapes, and acquiring the skills to lead organizations in this constantly evolving, ever-changing business landscape.

All too often, managers try to motivate their employees with money and outrageous perks. If that stuff worked, these companies would have a fully engaged workforce. Leadership expert Lisa Earle McLeod tackles the employee engagement crisis by showing leaders how to put workplace meaning front and center. Lisa’s book includes plenty of examples of how to put her words into action. It’s an easy read, with a very important message.
