100 books like Heroines of the Medieval World

This is a superb book that rightly won a number of literary prizes after its publication in 2020. 

Rather than play the parlour game of trying to guess the identity of Jack the Ripper, Rubenhold – a social historian – does what the book says on its cover: it tells the stories of the women who were killed by Jack the Ripper. We see them in their complexity and begin to understand the crushing social and economic circumstances that came to dominate their lives before they were murdered.  

Katherine is one of the first historical novels I read and one I go back to time and again. It tells the story of Katherine de Roet, daughter of a humble herald who captures the heart of a prince and becomes the ancestress of the Tudor kings of England. The love story of Katherine and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, third son of Edward III, is dramatic, heartbreaking, and beautifully written. It conveys a real sense of time and place and of a woman's position in the medieval world and the difficult choices faced by Katherine. Would I have abandoned everything for love, knowing I would be reviled by almost everyone? Yes, probably—if it meant having the gorgeous John of Gaunt.  

A romantic attachment between Lady Georgina ‘Georgy’ Lennox, later Baroness de Ros, and the Duke of Wellington matured into a long-lasting friendship. Georgy was present at the Duchess of Richmond’s famous ball, held before the Battle of Waterloo. Through Georgy’s eyes, we gain a different perspective on events—and people—that we thought we knew all about. This is a fascinating look at the life of a little-known woman who was a first-hand witness to some of the most important events of her era.

June Spencer was a debutante. In 1938, she was presented to the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace. A year later, her life changed with the outbreak of war. Always independent, June became an ambulance driver, and later a WREN. At the same time, she continued to go to nightclubs and spend time with well-connected friends, and fall in love. She detailed everything in private diaries which Clifford was given access to by June’s daughter. June was an extraordinary ‘ordinary’ woman, another who lived through ‘history being made.’ This is a wonderful account of her life and times.

So much has been written about the Brontë sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne but, what of their mother, Maria? In this fascinating book, Maria (and her husband, Patrick) are brought to the forefront of the Brontë story. We learn about Maria’s early life in Cornwall, her move to Yorkshire, her ambition as a writer, and the influence she had on her incredible daughters. We begin to understand Maria’s daughters better by getting to know Maria herself.

Walking Among Lions deals with not only a very obscure female figure but a medieval time frame, the reign of Richard II, that is not as often used in fiction as perhaps the 14th century or the time of Lionheart and King John. Constance is from a family that would become very famous the next century—the House of York. Her father is Edmund, son of Edward III—great-grandfather of Edward IV and Richard III. This book, part 1 of a series yet to be published, tells the story of her youth and early time at court, setting the scene for high and dangerous drama. It is beautifully written and packed with fine, accurate historical detail.

The Virgin Widow is a novel of one of England’s lesser-known Queens, Anne Neville, the wife of Richard III. Before she married Richard, however, she was briefly wed to Edward of Westminster, the Lancastrian heir, who was killed at the battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. This book chronicles Anne’s early life and her relationship with her father, the famous Warwick the Kingmaker, and then with the two young men she would marry. Anne O’Brien writes many interesting and engaging novels about medieval women.

Isabella is by prolific novelist, Colin Falconer who writes in many genres and covers many eras from ancient times through medieval to modern. Isabella has been the subject of quite a few novels but I enjoyed this one the most, owing to an engaging writing style that draws the reader along. Isabella also seems very human—not the harpy she is often made out to be in many fictional accounts. She is often called a ‘she-wolf’, an insulting term often used for medieval women who do things out of the ordinary, but Falconer’s book makes her more human, even if one cannot always agree with her decisions.

In the “traders vs. raiders” approach to Viking history, women stay home and look after the farm while the men go off on adventures. Three books published in the 1990s by Judith Jesch and Jenny Jochens brought the lives of these women out of the shadows, showing how vital their role was.

In Valkyrie: The Women of the Viking World, Jóhanna Kristín Friðriksdóttir brings these early studies up to date. With her mastery of detail from the Icelandic sagas, Friðriksdóttir follows an ordinary Viking woman from birth to death. She tells stories of women who are bold and successful, others who are battered and victimized.

She hopes to introduce us, she says, “to the diverse and fascinating texts recorded in medieval Iceland, a culture able to imagine women in all kinds of roles carrying power.” Like the mythical valkyries of her title, these are “women who decided.” To learn… show more.

I first came across this short book when researching for stories set in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Kathleen Herbert, (herself a historical novelist) provided not only excellent information, but also a practical vision of the period specifically from a woman’s point of view. It is easy to read and presents the information in an accessible way; perhaps one of the earliest books focussed on women’s history.
