The opening scene in this first in the series is one of the funniest I’ve ever read. I also like the character of “Izzy” Spellman, a twelve-year-old with attitude issues and a need to prove herself.
Although their dysfunctional family would drive me crazy if I were a part of it, I find the Spellman Investigations the perfect vehicle for occasionally dark humor and twisted plots.

I appreciate the lighthearted tone and well-informed information about gardens and gardening in this series. I started with the first in the series.
In this book, the gardener protagonist moves to London and takes a job where she, of course, finds a body. The nice thing about this book is that it combines a complex mystery with fully developed characters, an interesting location, and a touch of romance. These three characteristics are also true of the other books in this series that I’ve read.

I like the protagonist—burglar Junior Bender. He’s a good-hearted crook who finds himself entangled in strange situations that are often laugh-out-loud funny. I appreciate that he isn’t just another amoral crook but has his own moral code that fits his lifestyle and profession.
In addition, although he’s a fairly successful thief, he manages to do some pretty inept things, which only add to his likeability. I’ve read books in several other series by this author and find them consistently amusing.

I’ve read quite a few books by Cindy Sample. They are reliably funny, have interesting plots, and happy endings. In this book, Sierra Sullivan, an aging entertainer, swallows her pride and agrees to do a children’s birthday party.
When she discovers a corpse, becomes a suspect, and then wants to help her police detective daughter find the killer, I knew it was going to be a smile-filled journey filled with quirky characters until the killer was apprehended.

This is the book that’ll definitely get ‘em laughing. I like the idea of camping at home—in your living room or in your back yard—as well as in the wilderness. And this book is fun to bring along. I’ve been reading for 69 years, writing fiction for 43 years. I’ve read many more than 10,000 books. In my own writing, I begin with characters I create from combinations of traits and personalities I’ve met in life. I get to know them as friends. I then put them into the setting I’ve devised and given them free rein to develop the story. I know the destination, but the route is left to them. This involves much re-writing once the story is down on paper, but allows me to experience the excitement, concern, fear, love, and delights felt by the characters as I write the tale.

I first picked up a Clive Cussler book over ten years ago. I previously only ever read nonfiction. I was hooked. I always thought these action-adventure archeological-style novels would be toilet paper, but I was wrong. These books made me want to write them. For years before, I had studied the Egyptians, Sumerians, Incas, Mayans, and Templars. You name it and I knew about it, so I took my own experience and excitement and started creating my own books. The recommendations I have here are from some of the best of the best in the genre if you like sitting on the edge of your seat, twists and turns, and some really interesting history that most of us don’t know.
Ernest Dempsey is a maverick. He really pushes the gauntlet and what I like is that he has strong but flawed characters. I mean - who doesn’t want to own the International Archeological Agency - but its owner, Tommy, is actually just a pudgy rich kid.
Dempsey himself couldn’t get a book deal at all… for years, and then he persevered and just exploded. That’s like his plots and characters. They build and build, and they face lots of action. There is never a still moment in this book. Hero Sean Wyatt finds his friend kidnapped and a professor murdered, and this sets him off chasing a 4,000-year-old mystery.
This book is like Indiana Jones. You don’t quite take it seriously, but you enjoy it immensely.

A Trip with Trouble finds the inn totally rented out to Dangerous Curves Motorcycle Club, a group of women who plan to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway. On a ride that Misty is invited to join, things go awry when the tail gunner (last rider) is found dead. Although I enjoyed the whodunit aspects of the book, Kelly’s vivid descriptions of the Blue Ridge Parkway area and the mountains grounded the book in reality.
