This chart-topping writing duo can do no wrong in my eyes. Their Innkeeper Chronicles series ranks amongst my all-time favorites, but when it comes to fierce female protagonists, their Kate Daniels series truly takes the cake.

I find Kate fascinating. She has a complex backstory (no spoilers here!), and she is a masterful fighter, excelling in both physical combat and magical prowess. She consistently stands up for others, often putting herself in peril to protect those around her. 

I love how her wit and humor shine through, striking the perfect balance between light and shade. 

I will always remember the way she greeted a particular deadly lion shifter with a cheeky “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.” For me, Kate Daniels embodies everything a fierce female protagonist should be.

If I were ever to face a zombie apocalypse, I would want Mercy Thompson by my side. Mercy is a scrappy coyote shifter, and despite often being physically outmatched by the myriad supernatural creatures surrounding her, it is her intelligence, independence, and resourcefulness that truly sets her apart for me. I also just love that she is a mechanic, as Patty has taken that gender expectation and turned it on its head. 

I adore that when Mercy believes in something, she stands her ground, no matter the consequences. Her unwavering moral compass and fierce loyalty make her an awesome heroine. In a world filled with chaos, Mercy Thompson is the kind of fierce female companion every reader would be fortunate to have. And as I said, I totally call dibs on her for the apocalypse. 

I adore it when characters name inanimate objects, be it weapons or their cars; take my money, I’m all in. London, the kickass knight at the heart of this series, is the heroine I needed. Armed with her trusty axe, Babe, and an unwavering moral compass, London isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in the name of what is right.

I love everything about this book, including the phenomenal world-building and a kick-butt female protagonist to root for. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where the sun is forever obscured, allowing vampires to reign supreme, London captured my attention from the very first page.

I love her courage, strength, and determination, all of which make her an unforgettable character. And I loved Babe, the axe. 

Imogen is an absolute hoot, and I can’t wait for you to meet her. This is one of my all-time comfort reads. Fresh, fun, and fast-paced, it masterfully weaves feminism and pressing real-world issues into the narrative, a hallmark of Hignett’s writing that I thoroughly enjoy. It is also low-key hilarious—like, wear a panty-liner funny.

Imogen is just slightly on the wrong side of crazy, but who can blame her? She’s an immortal woman who has lived for millennia, and I’m pretty crazy after only thirty-seven years of revolving on this earth. With all that time behind her, you’d expect her to be channeling Hermione Granger know-it-all vibes, but instead, you’ve got this somewhat jaded screwball driven by a singular mission: to hunt down the monster that kills her repeatedly.

I love Imogen because she stands up for the underdog, often against her better judgment. Without a doubt, she is… show more.

This was my first foray into reading Urban Fantasy, and it made me very glad I did. This is the story of Lucy, a woman transformed into a werewolf, who must navigate the task of being Alpha of her new pack as well as adjusting to the new, often violent, world she’s a part of. I love how Heather deals with Lucy embracing a job she didn’t choose for herself. The interplay between the characters makes this a fun read with some very laugh-out-loud dialogue, especially in the interactions between Lucy and her Wolf, Esme. I think the whole ‘fish out of water’ thing speaks to all of us. Who hasn’t daydreamed, what if I could do magic, or had superpowers? The real question is, how would you cope if you suddenly could and it changed your life completely?

Whenever Tessa touches someone’s skin she hears their thoughts and experiences their emotions which makes having friends and dating difficult. When she finally meets the guy of her dreams, he bites her. Not in a fun, sexy way but in an I’m about turn you into a werewolf kind of way. To keep her from going feral, she’s forced to attend St. Ailbea’s Academy aka werewolf school. I love academy books and this one has all the feels.  

This werewolf coming-of-age story is amazing. There is an absolutely terrible movie version that is nothing like the book. Skip the movie. Read the book!

I devoured it in one sitting and immediately started rereading it. It’s got all that angsty romance that a YA paranormal story should have and then some.

Even the simplest jobs can turn out to be horrible. George and Lou are the nicest, most amiable underworld thugs you could meet. They just want to get their delivery job done and then go out for some beers and bowling. Except, the thing they don’t know is that their delivery consignment is a very angry werewolf. When it escapes, they are forced into a cat-and-mouse chase across Florida. No paycheck can be worth the horror and torment that Jeff Strand’s bloody comedy puts them through.

Alpha & Omega is a novella by Patricia Briggs, but it’s not one to miss! It starts the story of Charles and Anna (who are mentioned but not really seen or featured in the Mercy Thompson series) and slides right into the first book—Cry Wolf—in the Alpha & Omega series.

If you love a heroine who is a little broken but still fighting, this is for you. Anna has endured so much when she meets Charles, and their romance arc from the novella to the latest release is epic. There are six novels in the series + the novella, and honestly, I might like it even more than the Mercy Thompson series.

Charles’ taciturn nature, his soft side that only Ana gets to see, and how everyone else in the world fears him as the second most dangerous werewolf make him incredibly swoon-worthy.

Jacky is a relatable character who’s gone through a major upheaval.

She’s become a werecat. Not raised in werecat society, she doesn’t let their views against other supernatural species stop her from doing what is right. Despite a surrogate father who thinks he’s always right, and siblings who want her to conform, Jacky very much marches to the beat of her own drum. Life is never dull when you’re a werecat with honor.
