At the time, when I read this book, I’d just become a father. Naturally, the story about a father trying to protect his son in a harsh dystopian world was captivating for me and still is to this day.

I loved the book's gritty realism and felt as if I were walking beside the characters during the entire journey. I also found McCarthy’s writing style unique and something new from the best-selling paperbacks I’d often read before picking up his book.

Legends are made of powerful stuff, and nothing has greater power than a total flip in perspective. I still recall the gut-punch end to this book, though it’s been decades since I read it. 

Robert Neville is a vampire hunter by day and a tormented man by night. As seemingly the only living human in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, Robert faces depression, isolation, alcoholism, and his undead neighbor, Ben Cortman, who appears outside Robert’s front door each night chanting, "Come out, Neville."

But when Robert is finally captured, and the truth of his situation is revealed, he gets a good look at the world through the eyes of the undead and is forced to ask himself, who am I? What have I become? 

First, I found the writing in this book phenomenal, especially the dialogue. I feel like each bit of dialogue revealed something new about the character or pulled me deeper into the plot. It’s witty and dark. Honest would be a good word to describe it.

The characters felt so human to me–simultaneously loveable and deplorable, true to human nature. But it was the twist midway through the novel that really drew me in—the shift in reality. It changed the book for me, molding it into something unique, something I’d never read before.

It’s a novel I come back to time and time again, especially when I need inspiration.

A present-day western, Preacher is the story of a lost pastor who is suddenly infused with the word of God-allowing any who hear his voice to bow to his commands. His best friend is an alcoholic vampire. His love is a hard-fighting sharpshooter. The Angel of Death is an immortal wild west gunslinger, a cowboy with unmatchable firepower who stalks the modern landscape. The characters are some of the richest I’ve ever seen. There’s a hilarity that runs through the entire series, and a real beating human heart alongside it. Despite a seemingly nihilistic premise, Preacher is one of the most moving stories I’ve ever seen about friendship and remains true to ones principles. Steve Dillon as an artist is another example of beautifully economical storytelling.

Essential is right—any fan of the Caped Crusader needs this book! Greenberger is a former DC Comics editor, and his extensive research helped me rediscover characters I had forgotten about and learn about ones I had never encountered before. Along with being packed with great info, the book is filled with illustrations, including 32 full-page color covers.

While I wanted to know the history of Batman and all the facts and figures, I needed to know Batman’s larger cultural impact, and Brooker’s book helps provide it. He explores the different incarnations of Batman, from the comic-book page to the big screen. Brooker looks at the 1950s hysteria against comic books that targeted Batman, among others; the “camp” Batman of the 1960s TV show; and the Batman of films, from the 1989 Tim Burton version through the 1990s. Now all Brooker needs to do is update the book to include Christopher Nolan’s take on The Dark Knight! 

OK, I have to say this upfront: a lot of comic-book aficionados don’t care much for Bob Kane, Batman’s co-creator. He took too much of the credit for coming up with the Caped Crusader, at the expense of writer Bill Finger. And there are details in the autobiography that seem to stretch the truth. But I wanted to get Kane’s perspective on Batman and his development over the years. As a bonus, the book has complete color reproductions of several early Batman adventures. 

Like the Greenberger book, this official history of Batman from DC Comics is essential for any fan. Unlike Kane’s book, this account gives much more credit to Bill Finger as Batman’s creator and highlights many of the writers and illustrators who followed, shaping the Caped Crusader's image over the years. The color reproductions and photos—including ones of collectibles and movie stills—alone are worth the price of this great book. 

Peter Parker’s struggles give me life! Am I a sick and twisted person? Maybe. But I’m definitely not alone.

Preeti Chhibber knows the key to a good Spidey story is watching our little webhead struggle, and I adore how she puts him through his paces. She really delights in torturing our boy and pushing his buttons. Don’t worry; he still gets to crack jokes and be his charming self. It wouldn’t be a Spidey story without some genuine comedy!

I love it when you can tell how much fun the author had writing the book, and Preeti’s Spider-Man is exactly that. When I wasn’t giggling, I was feeling all the feelings. Maybe I’m not so sick and twisted after all?

A small crew of super-powered middle schoolers try to do some good and end up branded as super-villains...then they find out they rather enjoy it.

It’s an amusing premise filled with wacky inventions, silly antics, and a wealth of cute and creative superpowers. But the characters are also incredibly likable, and as we grow to care for them, we see them confront difficult ethical questions in a world that’s not as black-and-white as the superheroes might have you believe.

It’s a wildly fun world mixed with a heartfelt narrative carried out by characters you’ll love. What more could you want?
