The best heroic journey books

Why am I passionate about this?

My true passion is ultimately the supernatural version of The Hero’s Journey so well described by Joseph P. Campbell in his book of the same name. I’m inspired by the world’s legends about men and women who are forced by fate and destiny to a greater purpose against powerful demons and gods. The price is their normal life. Their first enemies are their own fears. The first sacrifice is the death of the old self, as they discover who they truly are meant to be. I feel this is ultimately the challenge we all face. The world is waiting. Live your dream… just without the 20ft. demon-forged ribbon sword and rescue hellhound.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Hounded

Mark William Hammond Why did I love this book?

I love this book because it’s about the struggle between attempting a normal-appearing life as the owner of Third Eye Books and Herbs in Tempe, Arizona, and the fate of fighting mythic monsters and gods. This story is colorfully told with drama, and humor provided by our hero’s mind-link with his goofy Irish Wolfhound.

By Kevin Hearne,

What is this book about?

The first novel in the New York Times bestselling Iron Druid Chronicles—the hilarious, action-packed tales of a two-thousand-year-old Druid pursued by ancient gods in the modern world

“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud-funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.”—Ari Marmell, author of The Warlord’s Legacy

Atticus O’Sullivan is the last of the ancient druids. He has been on the run for more than two thousand years and he’s tired of it. The Irish gods who want to kill him are after an enchanted sword he stole in a first-century battle, and when they find him managing an…

Book cover of God Touched

Mark William Hammond Why did I love this book?

An NYPD rookie cop also hunts demons in the parallel world of vampires and werewolves in the City. I really like the vivid settings like the special nightclubs where unsuspecting humans get to dangerously mingle with the bloodsuckers. I love the main character getting into even more monster trouble by falling in love with a vampire princess.

And it's not even halloween yet.

Book cover of Monster Hunter International

Mark William Hammond Why did I love this book?

I found this book so much fun! Great action and humor when an accountant and total supernatural skeptic wakes up in a hospital with no memory of murdering his boss-turned-werewolf in self-defense. Turns out all the monsters are real! He gets a job offer while in the hospital to work for…  Monster Hunter International.

Book cover of Skinwalker

Mark William Hammond Why did I love this book?

I love the main character, Jane Yellowrock. She’s the last Native American skinwalker and can transform into any creature. She struggles to be a good friend to regular humans, usually hunts vampires for a living, and rides a motorcycle. She has a big dilemma!  Last year she killed a whole coven of vampires preying on a rural town. Her new clients this year are… vampires. Tricky. What’s not to love?

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind—a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katies’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps.

Amidst a bordello full of real “ladies of the night,” and a hot Cajun biker with a…

Book cover of Preludes & Nocturnes

Mark William Hammond Why did I love this book?

I love this graphic novel about Morpheus the God of Dreams and the other gods that inhabit humanity’s unconscious aka the Endless. He escapes from imprisonment and struggles to rebuild our dreamworld called The Dreaming. I love that Morpheus’ problems are basically the same as ours. He’s trying to find his place in a world with surprising traps and a constantly evolving understanding of what it means.

What is this book about?

New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series THE SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision. In PRELUDES and NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power.…

When Miranda’s fiancé, Russ, is being vetted for his dream job in the U.S. attorney’s office, the couple joke that Miranda’s parents’ history as antiwar activists in the Sixties might jeopardize Russ’s security clearance. In fact, the real threat emerges when Russ’s future employer discovers that Miranda was arrested for felony kidnapping seven years earlier—an arrest she’d never bothered to tell Russ about.
