Conroe has a talent for creating interesting characters, as Chris Gordon, the main character in this book, illustrates. He has violet eyes, a perfect physique, and enough sexual chemistry to overwhelm most women. Yet he is at best standoffish with them.

I was puzzled by this pattern until I realized his motivation. He lives a dangerous life, exorcising demons and driving them back to Hell. He doesn’t want to subject a woman to that kind of risk. It’s lucky that he finally encounters a woman who can deal with such risks—Tatiana Demidova, a vampire princess.

This is a long-running, fantastic urban fantasy/superhero series with a strong reliance on magic and romance. At its heart is a powerful message about the strength of family, and while there is drama and a certain amount of darkness, and even gore, the message is entirely an uplifting one. Good triumphing over evil. There are spinoffs and anthologies, the overarching plots are engaging and once you pick up the first one, you won’t be able to stop until you’ve read the last. 

An NYPD rookie cop also hunts demons in the parallel world of vampires and werewolves in the City. I really like the vivid settings like the special nightclubs where unsuspecting humans get to dangerously mingle with the bloodsuckers. I love the main character getting into even more monster trouble by falling in love with a vampire princess.
