The best vampire romance books that make you want to get bitten

Why am I passionate about this?

What if there was something you absolutely had to do to survive, but you were bound by world rules that prevented you? What would you do? These are the kinds of impossible dilemmas the characters in my Community Series face. Hidden from discovery in a secret, underground town, the vampires of Ţărână struggle against the threat of extinction while trying to forge a difficult path toward love with an unforgiving humanity. Combining the dark intensity of True Blood with the small-town vibe of Virgin River ended up creating—to my utter delight—an award-winning series that has become “wildly popular” (Readers’ Favorite) with paranormal romance fans.

What is my book about?

Following a car accident, Dr. Toni Parthen is kidnapped from her hospital room and imprisoned in a mysterious underground town. Here, she is asked to do the unthinkable—breed with one of the townsmen. Escape is her only goal, but outwitting the tight-lipped head of security isn’t easy. He’s as emotionally scarred as she is…and she’s falling for him.

Bound by a vow of celibacy, Jacken Brun must push Toni away, even though he’s drawn to her like no other woman. There’s something eerily different about Toni…Turns out she’s the key to unimaginable power, and when two factions of demons go to war over her, Jacken must dig deep into his heart to find more than his skills as a warrior to save her…

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Lover Awakened

Tracy Tappan Why did I love this book?

Love alpha males?

The men in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward are the original bad boys of vampire romance. With her street-slang style of writing, Ward is one of the best in the business at immersing a reader into deep POV.

Lover Awakened (book 3 in the series) is one of my favorites because of the compelling hero. Zsadist, a former blood slave, bears so many internal wounds that watching the psychological growth he must conquer to find love with Bella is truly enthralling.

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Looking for a hero who puts his life on the line for others? Then you’ll love Adrian’s Breed Vampires as much as I do!

The warriors of the Order are pressed upon to fight their own kind whenever a vampire goes dangerously rogue, making for some angst-ridden clashes. Kiss of Crimson earned a spot at the top of my list once again for the dark, sexy hero.

“Dante…was wearing biker’s leathers and a fitted tank that showcased both his inked tattoos and his more elaborate Breed markings. His thick biceps were banded with intricate scrollwork, which, to human eyes would seem oddly abstract… Vampire eyes would see the symbols for what they truly were; dermaglyphs…like living tattoos, the glyphs changed hues according to a vampire’s emotional state.”

Top-notch world-building here!

With one reckless, irresistible kiss, Dante binds Tess to himself for eternity...

He comes to her more dead than alive, a huge black-clad stranger mortally wounded and rapidly losing blood. As she struggles to save him, vet Tess Culver is unaware that the man calling himself Dante is no man at all but one of the Breed, vampire warriors engaged in a desperate battle. But in a single erotically-charged moment Tess is plunged into his world - a shifting, shadowed place where bands of Rogue vampires stalk the night, cutting a swathe of terror.

Haunted by visions of a dark…

Book cover of Halfway to the Grave

Tracy Tappan Why did I love this book?

Enough of heroes! Let’s talk strong, kick-butt heroines like Cat Crawfield from the Night Huntress Series.

Uniquely half-human, half-vampire, Cat is actually a vampire hunter in this series starter. ’Course circumstances drastically change when she’s captured by one of the enemy.

The smoldering vampire, Bones, lo and behold, is actually a good guy. After some intense battling, these two end up becoming partners. They begin to train together, which leads to my favorite part—Cat and Bones are absolutely combustible.

Their passion is off the charts.

Book cover of A Hunger Like No Other

Tracy Tappan Why did I love this book?

I’m a sucker for a good enemies-to-lovers romance, and A Hunger Like No Other brings together the most unlikely pair.

The hero Lachlain—an alpha male at his most beastly—is a werewolf who was tortured by vampires for over a century. His fated mate...? You guessed it. A vampire.

Emmaline is actually a half-vampire, half-Valkyrie. But even though Emma holds the Norse Valkyrie warrior spirit within her, her sheltered life has made her timid.

Watching Emma evolve into the strong, resourceful woman she is meant to be is as much of a page-turner as seeing her tame Lachlain into the man of her heart.

He's disoriented and full of hatred, and yet he finds the mate he's been longing for for 1200 years in a small, delicate vampire. Desperate to find information on her parents, Emmaline Troy, a timid, overprotected half vampire/ half valkyrie, had travelled to Paris away from the protection of her valkyrie aunts for the first time in her young life (she's only 70), but she manages to be kidnapped by a raging Lykae who's tender to her…

Book cover of Guilty Pleasures: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel

Tracy Tappan Why did I love this book?

I love romances that are action-packed, and the story in Guilty Pleasures moves at Mach speed.

The heroine, Anita Blake, is a necromancer (someone who can re-animate the dead), but on occasion, she is also called upon to kill the undead. The duality of these roles, as you can imagine, drags her into all kinds of trouble.

Soon she runs afoul of master vampire, Jean-Claude—who she is also crazy-hot for. The power-brokering banter that goes on between these two formidable characters is some of the best. There’s never a dull moment.

What is this book about?

Meet Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, in the first novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that "blends the genres of romance, horror and adventure with stunning panache"(Diana Gabaldon).

Laurell K. Hamilton's bestselling series has captured readers' wildest imaginations and addicted them to a seductive world where supernatural hungers collide with the desires of the human heart, starring a heroine like no other...

Anita Blake is small, dark, and dangerous. Her turf is the city of St. Louis. Her job: re-animating the dead and killing the undead who take things too far. But when the city's most powerful vampire…

Why am I passionate about this?

I am a freelance writer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, specializing in media history and speculative fiction. I have been enchanted by animation since childhood and followed many series avidly through adulthood. My viewing inspired my MA thesis on the history of animation, out of which grew two books on the history and theory of animation on television, America 'Toons In: A History of Television Animation (available from McFarland and Co.) and The Encyclopedia of American Animated Television Shows (available from Rowman and Littlefield). Hopefully, others will follow.
