Full disclosure, Rick is my friend, but he is also a great world builder and storyteller. The Seventh Age trilogy is as funny and entertaining as it is terrifying. This is a fantasy book, and I love the genre for its sheer escapism. The world Gwynne creates is a version of the Viking Age, but where Ragnarök has already taken place, and the Aesir lost that battle at the end of days. Orka is a fabulous character, and the world building, including the monstrous skeletons of fallen gods, is so well done.

I'm the granddaughter of a Finno-Swedish immigrant and I grew up on his stories and insights. Because he came from the melting-pot generations of immigrants, he kept very little of the traditions of his origins, but his culture and sense of his ancestral home informed my interests.
