100 books like Intercepted

I pitched Sideline Confidential as The Devil Wears Prada set in professional football.

When I saw that Lauren Weisberger had written a sports novel, I was all in. After pro tennis player Charlie Silver suffers a devastating loss and injury at Wimbledon, she fires her longtime coach and sets out to rebrand her image from goodie girl to vicious competitor and sexy cover girl.

Of course, this journey abounds with bad decisions - like Charlie wearing a tiara in a tennis match- and results in some in-depth soul-searching about the person and player she really wants to be. This entertaining read mixes together the right amounts of sexiness and sports to appeal to any fiction fan.

Sports fiction is having a mega moment thanks to Carrie Soto Is Back, which has reigned atop The New York Times bestseller list.

As a former college volleyball player, I was particularly drawn to this novel because it follows a woman athlete’s comeback- the excruciating physical grind she endures as well as the emotional growth she realizes. Taylor Jenkins Reid captures the details and strategies behind professional tennis and makes them dramatic and compelling, which isn’t an easy feat. I know from experience.

But what makes this novel special is the heroine or perhaps the antiheroine. Tennis legend Carrie Soto can be hard to like because she is cold, brazen, unapologetic, arrogant, yet insecure and scared. As I read the novel, I felt myself shift from wanting to strangle her to rooting for her to win one more Grand Slam and open herself to love.

I met Katherine Center several years ago when she graciously spoke to my writing group. Her insights into the writing process and the fact that we attended the same high school made me an even bigger fan of her novels.

My absolute favorite is Happiness for Beginners, which was recently made into a Netflix movie. Main character Helen Carpenter is trying to put her life back together after getting divorced. At the urging of her younger brother, she signs up for a wilderness survival course. You may not think that hiking and camping is a sport but think again.

My husband and I hike in Colorado every summer. Steep and rocky terrain requires endurance, technical training, and courage. Helen learns this firsthand as she journeys deep into the wilderness with a colorful cast of characters. When this novel came out, I was traversing Texas, working as a sideline reporter for college football games.

I instantly related to the heroine Shea Rigsby who grew up on Texas football and dreams of becoming a football reporter. I had been in her shoes. That was my dream too. But you don’t have to be a football fan to appreciate this book. As Shea pursues a job covering the NFL and sparks fly with the Cowboy’s star quarterback, she struggles to find contentment in her career and romantic life.

It isn’t until she opens her heart to unexpected love and faces challenging family dynamics that she’s able to realize her deepest desires.

This was my first RVD book and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to read her. Her style is so fun and addicting, I had the hardest time ever putting the book down. Full of angst (hello, love triangle!), humor, and heat – this is one that will get you all up in your feels.

Friends to lovers is one of the tropes I enjoy when done right, and this book does it right.

Add in the fake dating and the story is elevated to a thoroughly fun time. I loved the tension and secret pining between the two leads almost as much as the dynamic between Nathan (the male lead) and his teammates as well as the teammates with Bree (the female lead).

The scene where the football team helps Nathan make a playbook for getting out of the friend zone was one of my absolute favorites. Everyone’s personality shined and I love when friend groups are loud, fun, and chaotic. 

Aiden and Vanessa’s story is another slow burn, but it does not feel slow at all. Zapata has a way of building a sensual story that makes you want more without feeling as if you are missing something. I did not think I would like slow-burn romances until I came across Zapata. I fell in love with these characters as they were becoming friends and ultimately as they fell in love with one another. I found myself smiling a lot watching the interactions between these two. It’s magic. I still think of Aiden often and wish he were my boyfriend! (That is how much I liked him).

I have enjoyed all the books in the Bridgerton Series, even though, or maybe because, they are much different than the Netflix series by the same name. Julia Quinn is the master of writing about women with an attitude, and this book is no exception. Eloise, thought to be a hopeless spinster, finds herself with a pen-pal. She never expected the widower in the letters to propose, but willing to create a new life for herself, she runs off in the middle of the night to accept his offer. The story that follows is charming, realistic, and thoroughly enjoyable. 

I love Eloise in this story. She is smart and funny and brave. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks, or maybe she simply isn’t afraid to step outside her comfort zone and go against the norm. Whatever the case, the romance in this book is smart and funny. I adore a… show more.

I read this book in grad school while I was working on an essay for the Los Angeles Review of Books about choosing to be child-free.

Sometimes, you just need some real talk and a reminder that the deck really is stacked against you when it comes to dating. This book helped provide some much-needed perspective so that I could understand that there’s only so much control I have over my own singleness and that there are cultural factors at play. 

Like authors Montgomery and McKinley, Georgette Heyer specializes in bringing us heroines that have interests and spunk that set them apart from the conventions of their time. I could have chosen nearly any Heyer heroine to mention, but if you’ve not yet read one of her Regency historical romances, I recommend beginning with Venetia. 

Venetia Lanyon has a good deal of common sense and sees herself as intellectually equal to the men around her, even if they don’t recognize it. She is beautiful, yes, but more interested in being valued for her smarts. A kind, yet plain-speaking heroine, it’s delightful to watch Venetia fall in love with an equally direct and open-minded gentleman. His respect and affection for her gives her the courage to do what she must in an effort to secure her own happiness.
