The Wolf Suit wends through a dark wood, illustrated in a stark folk-art style that is in turns haunting and verdant. The story takes its time, building a deeply delicious atmosphere of suspense before revealing a completely unexpected ending that turns a fearful forest into a much friendlier place.

Keep a bowl of blackberries handy (and maybe a blanket to clutch), and relish the page turns! While The Wolf Suit is long in pages, the text is concise and flavorful, making this book a conquerable challenge for young readers!

Donut Feed the Squirrels, like all of the books in the Norma and Belly series, is just plain beautiful. Illustrated entirely in loose ink-brush and watercolor, the art is soothing and lovely, which complements the gentle humor and friendly antics of its main characters.

This series is about the strivings of city-park critters (mostly squirrels) to acquire their latest delicious craving (and then get themselves out of the ensuing pickle)!

These books relax me like a good sit in the sun. The characters have sweetness and depth, cunning and naivety, all in wholesome combination. And did I mention it's gorgeous? (First in a series!)

The Flying Beaver Brothers series moves at lightning speed through compelling (and often dastardly) plots!  Packed with laugh-out-loud non-sequiturs, 4th wall breaks, and recurring characters, this book is densely rewarding to readers. Lucky for you, there are lots of books in this series, and you'll want them close at hand after you finish the first!

One of the things I like most about this series is that the jokes are multi-dimensional and not 'made easier' for kids...they're full-strength funny! My second favorite thing? The ridiculously inventive sound effects. (First in a series!)

I love the story of these best friends who, in trying to add something new to their lives, end up learning that the grass isn't always greener in someone else's yard!

The rhyme and meter are perfect, which makes it fun to read aloud, and the humor is subtle and sweet! Matthew Cordell's illustrations of Ollie and Claire are equally as sweet and matches the text perfectly!

When a new student, Lisa, comes to Gaspard’s class, he thinks she looks weird. Other than her color, she looks identical to Gaspard and they are both the only dogs in a classroom of humans, but Gaspard does not want anything to do with Lisa. After he learns she is a fast runner who helps his team win a race, he changes his mind and they become friends forever. The loose, bright paintings accentuate their childlike personalities. All their naughty “misadventures” make us laugh out loud every time we read them, which is a lot! 

Choosing this book was a no-brainer for me as I absolutely adored this novel. It reminded me of my younger self in high school, very artistic and yet still trying to “fit in” with the cool kids and trying to find my own way and destiny. The storyline revolves around a cool Piper Perish who “inhales air and exhales art.” She and her best friends Enzo and Kit, are dreaming of leaving Houston to get into art school in New York City. It’s been Piper’s dream her whole life, and now that senior year is halfway over, she’s ready for the Big Apple. Of course, a few challenges get in the way, including boys and family drama, which make the story very relatable and engaging.

I was teaching high school when this novel came out over twenty years ago, and it immediately struck a chord with me, and with my students. This story of a lifelong friendship and the pain that comes with growing up has so many great characters. But Carmen has always been my favorite. The relationship with her father, her emergence into the (literal) spotlight, and her willingness to speak her mind to her loved ones, make her, for me, the true heroine of this novel. One of my favorite moments is her surprise and wonder when the pants actually fit her, not just her skinny friends. The idea that she had access to all the things they did, regardless of her size, is a beautiful metaphor for living. 

Even though today's South Asian families are extremely progressive when it comes to issues relating to their daughters, this was not always the case. Up until very recently, the choice between education and marriage was a very real one for a South Asian young woman. Devi captures this issue beautifully in her story which is set in the 80s. Devi captures this beautifully in the story of her protagonist, Heera, whose experience presses up against the expectations not only of her family but of what it means to be a brown woman in America in the 80s. 

I have been a fan of Marieke Nijkamp ever since I read This Is Where It Ends. She is such a powerful writer. The way she delves into the psychology of her characters had me riveted. Even if We Break is a layered story with a slower pace than the other books I’ve chosen, but the characters feel so real. I found myself thinking about them long after I closed the book. The creepy factor snuck up on me and then sunk its claws in deep. I was unsettled in the best way. It's a step off the beaten path of your standard isolation thrillers, but one I highly recommend taking if why people do the bad things they do is as important to you as how.
