100 books like Black Boy, Black Boy

This book teaches the importance of community-building. It celebrates diversity and inclusion as both a strength and asset.

It dispels the myth of race by focusing on our shared humanity and common destiny. It gets to the basics that our DNA is 99.999% similar hence building common ground across differences.

It also encourages each of us to discover the values of love and kindness.

I shared this book with my students as a tool to explore their cultural heritage and build new connections.

This book celebrates diversity through the power of positive affirmations.

This is a reminder that our words have power, something I love to embrace and encourage. I see this book as a reminder to all that we can speak encouraging and motivating words in order to unveil the talents of our children.

I also appreciate the way it includes not only a joyful story but fantastic illustrations and the integration of different languages.

Diversity takes many forms, including diversity of learning styles.

I appreciate the topics tackled in this book. It’s the first in a series that I share with others often as it focuses on things not often seen in children’s books.

I love the illustration style and the glossary provided about terms that many children won’t inherently understand. I gladly welcome the ways this book helped me gain a deeper understanding of individuality while discovering connectivity. 

I love the journey this book brings readers on.

It raises questions of what can we build together, how do we live out our values, and what does a sense of belonging look like? As we each go on this journey of exploration, we can redefine our present and build a better future.

In addition, I appreciate that this book is also offered in Spanish, something that can be hard to find for young readers. 

Why this book? Two words: Aaron Sorkin. This book collects six of his teleplays, but I think you could get just as much by watching the first four seasons of “The West Wing.” Osmosis, do your thing!

Dialogue, character development, how to get into a scene, how to get out of a scene, juxtaposition … it’s all there, and more in Sorkin’s writing. This book contains some of my favorite episodes (although it doesn’t have my favorite, “Noel”), and some of his best speeches. In particular, Bartlett’s rant in “Two Cathedrals” and Toby’s frustration in “17 People” (“I will bet you all the money in my pockets against all the money in your pockets…”) Sorkin’s mantra (intention and obstacle) is probably the shortest and best advice you can get about how to keep characters alive in a scene. Feel bullied by thoughts, emotions, anxieties? Find yourself wallowing in past regrets or resentments, or projecting into a foreboding future? Eknath Easwaran shows how damaging thought patterns result in giving away the present - the only time we’re ever guaranteed, feeding a self-absorption that exacerbates our suffering. Easwaran explains the age-old spiritual tool known as mantra, demonstrating the ways we can use it to transform our pain. Using a sacred word as a pivot from negativity trains the brain to focus instead on the positivity we know as God. I found myself deeply grateful to Easwaran during the endless wait as my daughter-in-law struggled through the excruciatingly long and perilous delivery of my grandson. “Oh Sacred Heart…” kept me afloat and held us all in the palm of God’s hand.

This is one of the very few books that made me yelp out loud in surprise when the twist happened, and I will forever recommend it because of how unique it was. The feel is reflective of The Road with the main part of the story showing a pained journey through a dangerous landscape. It also feels post-apocalyptic as these survivors struggle to cross the abandoned world that’s been overtaken by nature. The author wrote in a unique language that makes Idyll feel otherworldly but familiar too. All this blends together for really great world-building. I don’t want to give anything away, but there is a definite twist where the whole story flips into something different. You go from feeling like this is a Western to suddenly — Oh, yep, there’s the sci-fi!  

This book is pragmatic and less complex than any sales-oriented book I have ever read. The simplicity and truths make 100% sense like, “Happy cows give more milk, and happy salespeople tend to sell more.” And, “There’s a much better way to close sales and find happiness than walking on hot coals and repeating mantras. I didn’t know that for certain until I did the research for this book.” 

The author, correctly in my view, discounts the value and importance of the huge piles of sales books that give sales advice that seems formulaic and manipulative. His focus is real and on mindset, saying, being happier is likely to make you more successful. Instead of just discussing how to close more sales he presents ways you can be happier.

Successful salespeople are pragmatists. They are realistic about their own abilities. They focus their efforts on activities that are actually likely… show more.

I love a good sisters novel—maybe because I always wished for a sister of my own? This cast of unique and engaging characters quickly drew me into their lives as these young women with very different personalities found ways to accept their widowed dad's plans to reopen the summer camp where he’d met their mother. I also enjoy a good plot twist, and the one at the end of this book was just right, a touching way to tie everything together. This book was primarily the eldest sister Cam's story, which means more books to follow with insights into the other sisters’ lives. Have I mentioned I love sequels? Once I connect with a set of characters, it’s hard to let them go!
