I met Eddie Wilson in the early 2000s, and hearing his stories over a meal at his restaurant Threadgill’s (the spot where Janis Joplin got her start) put me on the road to becoming a Texas music historian. With a glint in his eye, he would describe the unbelievable goings-on at the Armadillo World Headquarters, the Austin venue he created in 1970: Willie Nelson’s transformation on finding hippie audiences, Bruce Springsteen trying to prove himself in Central Texas, Australian rockers AC/DC in their first American appearance, live recordings of Frank Zappa and Freddie King.

If the Armadillo World Headquarters is one central node of countercultural country music in Texas, Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnics was the other. Where the Armadillo closed down in 1980, though, Willie’s picnics persist as an annual institution to this day. Author Dave Thomas has extensively researched the phenomenon and crafts its half-century history well.
The resulting volume is a riveting account that uses the sun-baked Texas ritual as a launching pad for stories encompassing all of America. A newspaper journalist, Thomas has an eye for detail and an ear for turns of phrase that kept me turning the pages long after I should have turned out the lights. If you ever wanted to read about a sort of country music, Woodstock Groundhog Day, this is that book.

Lead Belly is a ghost that haunts all of American music. His voice is at the center of Bob Dylan’s folk revival as much as it is behind the Beatles’ British Invasion. When Nirvana made their final live recording, they closed with a Lead Belly tune, Kurt proclaiming that Lead Belly was his favorite artist. was onto something, but I wasn’t prepared for the cumulative effect of A
Visit from the Good Squad, which bounces between past and present (and,
occasionally, into the future).
One character asks, “Time’s a goon, right?”
Time is, though I hadn’t considered how until surrendering to Egan’s vision,
which spans from NYC to Africa to PowerPoint. Whether this is a collection of linked
stories or novel or some other hybrid form is irrelevant; the book is pure sorcery.
It was one of the thrills of my career to bring Egan to Omaha in 2019 to lecture
to the University of Nebraska MFA in Writing.

Lydia views the world through carnage visors and takes no prisoners on her journey, weaponizing the abuse she experienced in childhood against authority as an adult. As an independent author, I’ve been lucky enough to find a wealth of other independent authors out there. People who are doing things that aren’t quite mainstream. Artists who are experimenting with the written word and doing truly unique things. Where the world is filled with books made for the sole purpose of being turned into movies, these authors are creating works of fiction that are suited for the written word. Masterpieces that will make you think and want to find even more new forms of fiction. Simply put, independent authors are pushing books into new realms that you simply can’t find in the mainstream market.

But that still doesn't do this book any sort of justice because this isn't really a superhero book. It’s not an easy task to convey the carnal intensity and animal abandon of a performer whose default mode has always been unadulterated excess, but Paul Trynka’s masterful study of Iggy Pop hit the motherlode. Trynka went the extra mile and then some, tracking down hundreds of key witnesses to, and victims of, Pop’s creative chaos, and even attending his high school reunion (which is more than Iggy did). Jaw-dropping anecdotes were legion (taking a mid-gig dump behind the speakers, anyone?) and Trynka captured the driven essence of this brittle soul, perennially fighting the world while never even knowing why.
