I feel like Rachel Hauck is the queen of royal fiction in the Christian romance genre. She was the first author I read in the genre to have royals which made me a huge fan. There’s such elegance in her writing but also humor, a swoony hero, and a heroine to cheer for. Not to mention her covers are all awesome for her Royal Wedding series. I couldn’t make a royal recommendation list without her on it.

There’s so much emotion in this book coupled with a Christianity arc that has endeared itself to readers for decades. I read this book decades after its release date, but I could quickly see why so many people enjoyed their royal happy ever after.

I think the makeover trope resonates with me because although I’m no beauty queen now, I was definitely an ugly duckling in my teens. After university, I found my own style, but it wasn’t until I was accepted as an international flight attendant that I believed that I couldn’t be all that ugly if Qantas employed me!
This story was a funny, sexy romance and I loved the slow-burn as Ian falls for a woman, Blake, who is off-limits for a number of reasons. I also really loved the banter between the characters. Maybe it’s because I’m a speech pathologist, but I absolutely love dialogue in the books I read. I think it quickens the pace of the book and can reveal so much about the characters.
Although the plot was fairly simple, this book was so much fun, and it ticked all the boxes for me!

My recommendations are more like a diary of my nascent writing career. I don’t mean to get melodramatic here, but these five Korean-American authors literally (get it?) built me. None of them know this, but they were a quintet of Dr. Frankensteins who created Sung J. Woo, writer. I dared to write my first novel because these authors showed me how, in the best possible way, the only way, really: through their printed words. I’ve visited Amish communities for years as a tourist. An agent suggested I write it because of my faith in God. The Amish base their lifestyle and traditions on their faith in God, and she felt the books would be more authentic if the author felt the same. I’ve never been Amish, but the topic is fun to research, and some of the Amish are forthcoming in helping me. I love the fried chicken, homemade butterscotch pie, corn pudding, and beautiful quilts they have available when visiting the different Ohio and Indiana communities. They are not my typical audience.

I love to laugh. I don’t think there’s anything better than the sound of laughter. I’m originally from the Midwest and we tend to have a self-deprecating sense of humor—we like to laugh at ourselves. I’ve been in love with romance novels since I read my first Kathleen Woodiwiss book in my twenties. Although there are many sub-genres within romance, I prefer historical and contemporary (which I also write). My favorite stories have entertaining characters, witty banter, and lots of humor. For me, reading is like taking a vacation to the world within the pages of a book, and I want my vacation to be fun!
This is book two in Hovland’s Mile High Matchedseries. Florist Jase Dvornakov cons cookie baker Heather Reese into pretending she broke his heart so his matchmaking family will give him space while he “heals.” Unfortunately, Jake’s manipulative Russian Grandmother—Babushka—is out for revenge and Heather is in her crosshairs. Between Heather’s naughty-shaped cookies, an interfering Babushka, and her frustrated grandson, this story is a hoot. Once Heather and Babushka team up, it’s all over for poor Jake. It’s not just the couple’s relationship issues, but their close friendships that make the story so engaging. I laughed out loud—a lot. Babushka makes appearances throughout the series and all the stories are great, but for the humor factor, this one is my fave.
