Great romantasy books that aren’t by Sarah J. Maas

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m passionate about this because I write romantasy too, and so do many other wonderful authors. Sarah J. Maas is a legend in the Romantasy genre, and she’s prolific, so there’s a lot to read with her various series. But, if you’ve finished with her books and are looking for more, there are plenty of authors out there doing amazing, spine-tingling, dare I say loin-tingling work, and we should celebrate them. Besides, no matter how prolific Ms. Maas is, readers will always finish books faster than even she can write them.

What is my book about?

Becs Greenblatt is a Summoner, a person who can summon Powers (gods, demons, fae, and the like) to the mortal plane. She does this for clients desperate for information or favors, but it’s dangerous. While the Powers she summons can’t hurt her, they can hurt her family and friends, and if she doesn’t negotiate carefully, her clients themselves.

When we meet Becs, a demon summoning has gone horribly wrong, and she’s fixed it, but now she owes a demon a favor, and she doesn’t know what he’s going to ask, when he’s going to ask it, or what he’ll do if she says “no.” And to top it off, she’s got a gorgeous, mysterious upstairs neighbor who smells like birthday cake and sex and who doesn’t know she’s stealing his WiFi.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure

J.D. Blackrose Why did I love this book?

What? You didn’t know there was a book? There is! Now, the movie is, in my humble opinion, the most perfect movie ever made, but the book came first.

I read the book ages ago and fell in love with it. More in-depth than the movie and a little different in places, it is worth the read, and if you want to follow up with a small, equally as fun read, try The Silent Gondoliers, also by Goldman.

By William Goldman,

Why should I read it?

19 authors picked The Princess Bride as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 14, 15, 16, and 17.

What is this book about?

William Goldman’s beloved story of Buttercup, Westley, and their fellow adventurers.

This tale of true love, high adventure, pirates, princesses, giants, miracles, fencing, and a frightening assortment of wild beasts was unforgettably depicted in the 1987 film directed by Rob Reiner and starring Fred Savage, Robin Wright, and others. But, rich in character and satire, the novel boasts even more layers of ingenious storytelling. Set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin, home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest…

Book cover of Fourth Wing

J.D. Blackrose Why did I love this book?

This book isn’t a surprise as it is on many people’s top ten lists, but it does deserve to be there. The main character is compelling, as is her love interest, and the plot is intricate enough that I wasn’t completely sure where it was going.

The cutthroat rider school where teens die every day from training and betrayal is a blunt backdrop to the larger world where life and death decisions are minute-by-minute situations. A real page-turner.

Book cover of A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons

J.D. Blackrose Why did I love this book?

I loved the main character, the beautifully named Saffron Everleigh. She’s a woman in 1923 London, trying to make her way in academia at a time when women weren’t usually allowed in the doors.

Her scientific interests and studies in botany come in handy when she attends a dinner party for the school, and a professor’s wife drops to the floor, poisoned by an unknown substance. Working with the equally passionate, ahem, Alexander Ashton, a fellow researcher, Saffron must investigate the murder or wind up next on the murderer's list. There are two more books in this series, so we are lucky to spend more time with our plucky heroine.

2 authors picked A Botanist's Guide to Parties and Poisons as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The Lost Apothecary meets Dead Dead Girls in this fast-paced, STEMinist adventure.

Debut author Kate Khavari deftly entwines a pulse-pounding mystery with the struggles of a woman in a male-dominated field in 1923 London.

Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to blaze a new trail at the University College London, but with her colleagues’ beliefs about women’s academic inabilities and not so subtle hints that her deceased father’s reputation paved her way into the botany department, she feels stymied at every turn.

When she attends a dinner party for the school, she expects to engage in conversations about…

Book cover of Big Demon Energy: An Enemies-To-Lovers Urban Fantasy

J.D. Blackrose Why did I love this book?

The tagline for this urban fantasy/romantic fantasy says it all. “She’s just a demon, standing in front of a vampire, trying not to punch him.”

Aviva Fleisher is hiding her demon nature, working her butt off in a supernatural policing organization, and waiting for her promotion, which should come any day now. But, instead of getting the new job she deserves, she’s paired with Ezra Cardoso, a ruthless vampire who’s up to something to solve a series of bizarre murders.

This book is written with Wilde’s exceptional snarky humor, and it will keep you interested from beginning to end.

What is this book about?

She’s just a demon, standing in front of a vampire, trying not to punch him.

Aviva Fleischer hides a dangerous secret. She’s carefully concealing her infernal heritage, a.k.a. Cherry Bomb. Maybe it’s weird naming her demon side and referring to her in the third person, but guys do the same with their junk, and unlike most of them, Avi isn’t deluded about Cherry’s prowess.

Avi’s been working her ass off, climbing the ranks of a supernatural policing organization to enact change and empower those like her forced to hide their true nature. Sure, she’s bent the rules now and then,…

Book cover of Assistant to the Villain

J.D. Blackrose Why did I love this book?

This book is on many folks’ Best of 2023 list, and for good reason. It’s romantic, funny, and irreverent. And Maehrer birthed it from a TikTok series of short videos. There’s nothing not to like here.

Evie Sage needs a job badly. Her family needs the money to eat, so it doesn’t matter what employment she finds, just as long as they pay her. A chance run-in with the town’s most Evil Villain ends in a job offer, and she takes it. It doesn’t hurt that he’s attractive, even if he runs a nefarious crime empire. (Insert evil laugh here.)

While drooling over her boss isn’t required, it’s sure fun. However, it all turns very serious when someone turns against the Villain and puts her job in jeopardy. Besides, she’s not certain who the real bad guys are.

The joy here is how the author turns the hero/villain trope on its head and does so with cheeky humor. I can’t wait for the second book.

This is a book that once closed and last line read, my mind wandered to explore certain character motivations and potential follow-up responses. I don’t think an author has to answer every possibility, art comes into play best when the reader’s own imagination can wander within the story.
