There were many layers and themes, including gender, racism, and poverty.
I felt a personal connection to the two main characters, drawn in by
their loneliness and the undefined and often unrecognized strength they both
possessed. The plot was gripping in its intensity, and I found myself cheering
for the two girls as they navigated the incredible obstacles in their way.
I
usually read for a few minutes before bed, but this book had me staying up
late, unwilling (and unable) to put it down. The ending achieved what so many
don’t. A clear resolution and a satisfying conclusion to the storm of events we
had weathered together.

I've been writing and drawing children’s books and comic books for kids for over 23 years. I've always loved the comic book format and visual storytelling. Reading pictures is actually very stimulating for kids and adults alike. I’m also a parent to three daughters and teach art at an elementary school locally, so I work with children and see what captures their imaginations and inspires them. As someone who’s written and illustrated numerous graphic novels for kids, moderates a children’s book review group, and reads so many of the newest books available, I selected these graphic novels as some of the best I’ve read in the different genres that have been released recently.

Lua and Ember travel together across the Ocean to find the school in some incredibly beautiful passages in the middle of the book. Their journey and his struggle to fit in at his new school make for an incredible middle grade graphic novel that really speaks to all children.
The art is just stunning and it’s an easy-to-follow and beautiful story. I’ve enjoyed this writer/artist’s other graphic novels and this new one doesn’t disappoint!

When my publisher told me they were marketing the Rewind trilogy as time travel books, I protested that they were wrong. Although my Midwestern roots in southwest Michigan situated me far away from the sea, I am now an expert on small islands and remote communities in the greater Caribbean. As a result, I grew to understand that much of the everyday lived experiences of island people must contend with the sea. As a result, I have spent the last two decades studying topics such as migration, fishing, and even conservation as related to small islands from the better-known Cayman Islands to the lesser-known San Andrés and Providencia Islands. I am a history professor at the US Naval Academy.
