The most recommended romantic love books

I first read this remarkable, surreal tale many years ago. Recently, a new translation by Douglas Weatherford came out and, to my astonishment, proved revelatory. In it, a man searches for his dead father. Time is not linear. It’s hard to tell the living from the dead. In this haunting tale, the living haunt the dead as much or more than the other way around.

The book originally deepened my understanding of what novels can do. This translation expanded the remarkable, dream-like experience.

This was my first book by Colleen Hover because the blurb immediately appealed to me.

I love stories about female writers. I immediately sympathized with her unsuccessful career and was happy that she received an exciting job offer. And then immediate skepticism that everything couldn't be going smoothly there. The fear came slowly and made me look ever deeper into the abyss.

I read the book before going to sleep, which meant I stayed up late.

The first time I saw Mount Rainier, I joked with my husband that we ought to find a way to live within sight of it. That didn’t happen, but the memory of its beauty didn’t fade, and so when I was given an opportunity to read an advance copy of Regina Scott’s latest American Wonders book featuring a heroine who attempts to climb Mount Rainier, I said, “yes, please!” What a great book! The combination of multi-faceted characters, a careful blending of fact and fiction, and fascinating descriptions of mountain climbing in the early twentieth century kept me turning pages instead of sleeping or working on my own manuscript. This is a truly unputdownable book. 

The title says it all!

A woman on the run from the mafia relocates to a new town and faces both danger and (very steamy) romance. She’s the kind of spunky, quippy protagonist that I love, though she’d probably come across as a bit too much in real life. The book shines when she’s settling into the community and managing her new teaching job alongside an assortment of side characters who each have their little moments to shine. While the hero is the strong and silent type, he matches her energy perfectly.

This book is equal parts exciting and romantic. It’s probably the most re-readable book on this list and definitely the steamiest.

I heard Marilyn Monroe in everything Holly Golightly said. I heard her witticisms. Turned out Truman Capote wrote it using Marilyn’s voice.

Holly, a hooker, her protagonist (apartment neighbor) was an in-the-closet gay man. Holly would climb the fire escape and crawl into his room and snuggle in bed with him as if they were lovers. She never denied she was a hooker – but never hid that she had standards and would expect fifty-dollar tips for washroom attendants.

This novella, as does Grapes and Old Man, demonstrates to me the stage play of life we choose to be in is in acts—we know our assets, limitations and to survive we follow them—in Grapes pickers followed a dream to orange groves—in Old Man—a fisher needed to prove he could get his luck back—and in Tiffany—if she could find playgrounds of the rich, she’d survive.

The two main characters in Who Do You Love stayed with me long after I read this book, and I’ve found them popping into my thoughts again and again over the years – a sure sign of well-written characters. It’s the story of two people who come in and out of each other’s lives and how their love changes and evolves over time. Full of joy, heartbreak, hope, and loss, this love story will draw you in and stick with you.

I have a few soft spots when it comes to horror book subjects – and homes and wacky kids are among them. Robert Ottone's novel gives me both, in a sense.

A domestic drama that takes a little while to get going, it's about the terror of not being parents and losing your friends – and then the terror of becoming parents and losing your sanity. Ottone isn't afraid to go there with his creepiness and the slow fracturing of what seems like an unbreakable relationship, and he doesn't mind making the titular child in the book a true terror.

I like a book that sneaks up on you, and this one still lingers months after I finished it.

Of all the graphic novels I read last year – and I read around fifty – this was easily my favorite.

It’s a beautiful and bittersweet portrait of modern life that describes, with heartbreaking accuracy, a young illustrator’s struggle with his mother’s illness and his own ennui. McPhail’s delicately lined graphite drawings are delightful, the humor is spot on, and the protagonist’s yearning for personal connection in a world of social media and online dating apps is deeply relatable.

This is a book that I will read again and again and which I urge you to read as well. It’s just perfect.

I admire this novel for its seamless blend of classic noir themes and, in an unusual aspect of such a novel, racial issues.

I find the narrator to be a near-perfect blend of intelligence, determination, and the fatal flaws of lust and greed.  The femme fatale shares those qualities but adds more than a touch of ruthlessness. The novel features a number of compelling, even frightening scenes—for example, a late night burial, or re-burial, in a pet cemetery.

The plot is beautifully crafted, with a number of twists and turns that on my first read I did not see coming. And the ending is pitch perfect, a satisfying mix of death, sadness, and justice but with a glimmer of hope that contrasts effectively with the noir themes and at least partially resolves the racial issues.    

Another unputdownable book! This was my first Abby Jimenez story, and I was hooked from pretty much the first page. There’s so much sass!

The main characters Josh and Kristen get stuck together planning their best friends’ wedding. The Friend Zone is filled with hilarity, witty band references, and sexy banter, but there are also deep emotional issues. My editor recommended this book to me. He must know me well because I fell in love and will read anything Ms. Jimenez writes forevermore!

The second book in the Friend Zone series, The Happy Ever After Playlist was just as good, and I’m about to crack open book 3.
