Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been reading paranormal fiction for as long as I can remember and it’s always been my favorite genre. I love sci-fi and fantasy as well, but keep coming back to paranormal. I’ve been enjoying authors like Terry Pratchett, Phillip Pullman, Guy Gavriel Kay since middle school, and will happily inhale any story that takes me out of reality into a world where magic is real and the princess saves herself. Now that I’m writing my own joyful escapes into this genre, it feels extra special to get to be a part of this club and create my own magical world for readers to enjoy!

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Cry Wolf

Maggie Francis Why did I love this book?

This is the first book in this series and it introduces us to Anna and Charles, two very different people who are fated mates.

This series first introduced me to the idea of Omegas in paranormal fiction and it was such a fun and new way to look at the werewolf mythology.

This series is full of action and spice and this first book is a great place to jump into Patricia Brigg’s universe.

Maggie Francis Why did I love this book?

I inhaled this series when it first came out and I can’t wait to re-read it all again.

Kim Harrison builds a fully realized world with paranormal characters that felt fresh and exciting. The protagonist Rachel is a spitfire, hot-mess, take no shit heroine who is constantly getting herself into trouble that she has to fight her way out of.

Super fun and sexy!

Book cover of Dead Until Dark

Maggie Francis Why did I love this book?

While True Blood saw this series come to life on the small screen, the books are a lighter and deeper option for anyone who loved the show but wants to get more background info.

I read this series before the show came out and thoroughly enjoyed all the funny bits that weren’t as prevalent in the HBO version. Sookie was funny and fierce as I recall, which is an excellent combo for a leading lady to be.

What is this book about?

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much - not because she's not pretty - she's a very cute bubbly blonde - or not interested in a social life. She really is ...but Sookie's got a bit of a disability. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill: he's tall, he's dark and he's handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting all her life for. But Bill has…

Book cover of The Accidental Werewolf

Maggie Francis Why did I love this book?

I listened to this series on audiobook a few years ago and it had me in stitches the whole time.

The characters are funny, well rounded and the steam is A+. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy these as much as I did, but I think I giddily consumed at least 8 of them before I came up for air.

What is this book about?

When Marty Andrews gets bitten by a mangy mutt while walking her teacup poodle, her blond hair darkens, the hair on her legs starts growing at an alarming rate, and her mood swings put her dream job as a sales rep for Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics in serious jeopardy.

Then a drool-worthy man shows up at her door claiming that he accidentally bit Marty. And since he's a werewolf, she is now, too. Thinking Keegan Flaherty is clearly insane, Marty refuses to believe a word until a kidnapping makes her realize there's more at stake than just her highlights. And she must…

Book cover of A Hunger Like No Other

Maggie Francis Why did I love this book?

The entire Immortals After Dark series is a delightful slip into a darker paranormal adventure that you won’t be sorry to have fallen down into.

Cole takes the reader on a sexy-as-hell journey through a paranormal underworld full of darkness, desire, and sexy hijinks. Stumbling upon this series completely changed the trajectory of my reading habits and I am not mad about it.

This series is a little darker than the others on my list, but in no way too dark to jump into.

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve been obsessed with fantasy since my grandmother bought me the entire Dorothy and the Land of Oz series as a kid. I love discovering new types of fantasy characters, spins on characters, new lore in genres, and mythology woven in creative ways. For my fantasy group, I’ve researched many interpretations of fae, witches, elves, vampires, and shapeshifters. I’m always looking to add to my list, and I love finding Indie authors new to their niche. I feel so privileged to interview many authors like these and Jennifer L. Armentrout (squeal) for my podcast, The Finding the Magic Book Podcast. I hope you love these books as much as I did.
