Elva Cobb Martin is a household name in the Christian pirate romance genre, but I’d never read any of her works until I picked up The Sugar Baron’s Governess. After reading MaryLu Tyndall’s pirate romances, I didn’t think anything could quite compare...until I readVeil of Pearls. This privateer romance isn’t as adventurous, but the beautiful romance, intense but perfectly-paced plot, and endearing characters made this story just as exciting and intriguing! It’s easily my favorite of hers and a top recommendation for readers in search of a story that will touch andthrill their hearts!

I’m a criminal defense attorney, mom, and wife who grew up along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and lived there for 35 years, staring out at the vast water of the “Inland Seas” aka The Great Lakes. I was left speechless during some scenes and will never be able to forgot this book as long as I live. Two things I absolutely loved growing up: fantasy novels and history. Swashbuckling pirate stories are like a fantastic combination of both, and the way that the age of sail touched all corners of the world creates an opportunity for so many different kinds of stories to be told through this lens. As a queer writer, my passion is writing the kind of stories I loved as a child. As a trans adult, I find joy in making the next generations feel comfortable in their own skin. I’m a huge fan of queer re-tellings (as you can probably sense from this list) as well as lush, detailed historical fiction, and C.B. Lee delivers both in this vivid, adrenaline-spiking adventure.
