As a kid I loved visiting the local history museum, wandering through the dusty displays of taxidermy buffalo and medieval helmets. I enjoyed the creepy feeling Iād get when I stood next to the wax figures and looked at their frozen faces and not-quite-right hair. As I grew older, I became more interested in seeking out weird and unusual history, and it became a passion throughout my teenage years and into adulthood. Now, Iām able to combine my love of the creepy and occult with historical research. Ukraine had just become an independent nation after the collapse of the Soviet Union and we were supporting its path to democracy. I loved this beautifully written novel which embraces and honours the Ukrainian spirit. It is 1942 and the Germans have arrived in a small town in Western Ukraine. When the schoolmaster and his wife are rounded up and murdered along with all the other Jews, Yaisa, a local peasant girl, instinctively hides their two young sons away. The massacre is witnessed with horror both by a Ukrainian Auxiliary, now remorseful at having joined the German police, and by a German engineer who is building roads with forced Ukrainian labour. Now the hunt is on for the Jewish boys ā and for Yaisa too. An incredibly moving read that both hones in on one small town and pans out across the vast and varied landscape of Ukraine.

Iāve always been drawn to stories about Jewish survival. My motherās family were Yiddish-speaking Jews from Belarus, and as a child I was often asking questions about what their world was like before it was destroyed. I later studied at Brandeis University where I earned my doctorate in Hebrew and Yiddish Literature, and then taught Jewish Literature at the University of Toronto. When my novel Come Back for Me was published, it felt as though many of my lifelong passions had finally come together in one book. Yet Iām still asking questions. My second novel (almost completed!) continues my quest to further my knowledge of all that was lost.

Professor Elie Wiesel was instrumental in my translating and researching my motherās journals. My awakening to the dark period in the chapter of the Jewish history happened between 1971-1974 at CCNY, when our paths crossed while I was taking his classes at the department of Jewish studies. I grew up witnessing the trauma of suffering and loss. Iām a bicultural writer from the U.S. who has always loved reading historical novels, and I recently āfoundā my writing genre when I published a debut novel, set in Ukraine during the Holocaust. Writing about that horrific time is fraught with difficulty and is often a frightening endeavor. As writers, weāre obligated to get every fact right, as the truth honors the victims and survivors. To that end, I read dozens and dozens of booksāhistory, biographies, art books, memoirs, and fiction. There are many worthy books that could be on this list, but with just 5 to pick, these made a large impact on me beyond just factual research.
Appelfeld is considered one of Israelās foremost writers. He writes fluidly in beautiful, spare, fable-like prose. Appelfeld himself was a child survivor who escaped a camp and hid in the countryside and woods, making his āfactionā all the more authentic and powerful. The title character, Tzili, is a young Jewish girl who hides from the Germans in a country not specified (but is likely Ukraine). This novel brings to light the harsh conditions and horrors that āfreeā survivors faced, both during and after the war.
The youngest, least-favored member of an Eastern European Jewish family, Tzili is considered an embarrassment by her parents and older siblings. Her schooling has been a failure, she is simple and meek, and she seems more at home with the animals in the field than with people. And so when her panic-stricken family flees the encroaching Nazi armies, Tzili is left behind to fend for herself. At first seeking refuge with the local peasants, she is eventually forced to escape from them as well, and she takes to the forest, living a solitary existence until she is discovered by anotherā¦
In school, I was a math and science nerd but also loved to write. I got good grades, except in history; memorizing dates and events was boring. My dad loved history. When he told stories about historical figures, I was fascinated. In twelfth grade, my history teacher told stories like my dad, and I started acing the class. Since then, Iāve become obsessed with history and devour good historical books, particularly when they focus on the people who change history. And now, Iāve actually been in places at times when history was made.
As antisemitism is currently coming into fashion again around the world, I recommend this frightening true story of a young girl hiding from the Germans, Russians, and Ukrainians who were all looking to rob Jews or send them to their deaths during World War II.
It is sometimes hard to believe that people can be so cruel, but what I take away from this book is first, that these events will continue throughout history and second, that good people of strong will can survive any tragedy if they have hope, a strong will, and luck (or God) on their side.
