What I loved about the short stories is that Thomas Carnacki investigates the mysteries of the supernatural, seeking to solve them with his skillset. Sometimes, the cases are just pranks by humans, others by small spirits, and even some with malevolent forces.

Lumley is steeped in both the occult detective and the Lovecraftian tradition, and it shows most clearly in this set of pulpy occult detective stories featuring his cerebral-yet-tough Titus Crow, and involving wild flights of fancy in time and space that also arguably show some influence from Doctor Who. We get a lovely creepy origin story here, and several vignettes, but the highlight is the longer tale of the mysteries of the wyrm, and festering, crawling things in an ancient manor house and its library. It fairly oozes supernatural evil and is one of my favorite things.

Kathryn is one of the few romantic suspense/paranormal authors who has a genuine ability to fit in the ghostly niche while still creating a HEA. Her descriptive details put you right there amidst the haunting while rooting for the couple.

I have been an admirer of Dr. Robert Crookall ever since I first read this amazing work. While dealing with primarily out-of-body experiences, this book details apparitional encounters, examples of spontaneous telepathy and clairvoyance, and even near-death experiences long before the term even came into general use!
So many detailed accounts fill these pages, and there is a certain sincerity here that I enjoy. The letters to the author detailing the strange and fascinating experiences of ordinary people and the author's careful consideration were a dynamic I really enjoyed and kept me turning page after page!
In my opinion, this influential book needs to be on the shelf of anyone interested in spontaneous and mysterious human experiences.
