I was captivated by 101 Minutes because it documented what was going on within the Twin Towers before the collapse of the South and then the North Towers as those trapped above the fire floors and below desperately tried to find a way out. The two New York Times reporters who wrote the book – the late Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn - are former colleagues of mine at Newsday and at the NY Daily News, and they were the best in the business at the time of the attack.

I admired the thorough and bi-partisan approach taken by the 9/11 Commission (authorized by then President George Bush) to examine the international, national, and local ramifications of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Relying on first-hand testimony and extensive documentation, the commission staff provided valuable insights into the missed signals, mixups, and government failures on many levels that left America open to the worst attack on our homeland since the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Chief Pfeifer was the first ranking officer to arrive at the World Trade Center on the morning of the attack. He was in the area to investigate a report of a gas leak when he saw a plane crash into the North Tower.

He was being followed by a film crew for an unrelated documentary. The film footage shows him in the WTC lobby as he tries to determine what is going on and as he and others begin the rescue operation that would engulf virtually the entire FDNY and turn tragic when the Twin Towers collapsed.

This book takes you beyond the news coverage and provides a first-hand account from a ranking FDNY member who was on the scene.

Lucas is a football-obsessed teen who makes a series of completely relatable bad decisions that leave him right at Ground Zero just as the planes hit the towers. Told in age-appropriate but heart-stopping detail, this book captures a perfect snapshot of the confusion, fear, heroism, and resolve on display that extraordinary day. 

A precocious and inquisitive child Oskar goes on a treasure hunt around New York to solve a mystery left behind by his father who had died on 9/11.

In his quest, you see a child seeking to stay close to his father a little while longer. In his streams of consciousness and hyperactive imagination, you feel him trying to fill the void left behind by a supportive father figure.

With the sheer weight of his innocence, he gets strangers to open up to him, let him into their lives, and add to their life stories. In a moving manner, the narrative follows the path that Oskar, his mother and his grandfather take in dealing with trauma and finding closure in their own personal ways.

The September 11th terrorist attack is a difficult history to introduce.

Picture books can be a good way to start the conversation, especially with 8 and 9-year-olds. In This Very Tree, Sean Rubin broaches the topic through a remarkable Callery pear tree in the Twin Towers plaza which survived the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Rubin’s poignant artwork conveys both the destruction of that terrible day in New York City and the rebuilding efforts afterwards. Informative and lengthy back matter provides more information to complement the brief illustrated text. This picture book leaves the reader with an ultimately hopeful outlook of resilience and renewal. 

Told in alternating chapters, Ground Zero takes places eighteen years apart, through the eyes of a boy experiencing the terrorist attacks and a girl living through the Afghanistan war which followed.

On September 11, 2001, Brandon is visiting his father on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center when the planes hit. On that same date in 2019, Reshmina faces a battle in her Afghan village and the decision of whether to help a wounded American soldier.

This novel is a page turner which does not gloss over the horrors of the World Trade Center collapse or the Afghanistan War. When the stories of the two main characters intersect at the end, the reader is given a lot to think about. 

This book describes the early career of Judy Melinek, M.D., who was a forensic pathology fellow in New York City just months before the 9/11 attack.

I liked this book because it is a first-hand account of the forensic investigations that she and her team conducted regarding the deaths that occurred that fateful day.

Dr. Melinek describes the many other investigations she conducted during her time there. While most forensic pathologists have boring personalities, Dr. Melinek knows she works in a ghoulish profession and, therefore, writes with wit and is real. "Nobody shakes hands in the autopsy suite."

An American Muslim is chosen blindly by a jury to design a memorial to the 9/11 victims, opening it up to vociferous debates and dissensions, much like the Ground Zero Mosque controversy.

The author uses her vast experience as a New York Times journalist to eloquently describe the warps and wefts of the fabric of New York society, and starts tugging at several threads as it all unravels. The players’ tug-of-war is well portrayed in rich texture, while the politicians’ intent on not letting a good crisis go to waste adds satirical color to the expansive tapestry.

As a creator, one feels that art has no religion and has no boundaries. The axiom is severely tested in the face of rabid nationalism, parochial intolerance, and a media free-for-all.
