100 books like Hot Dog

I absolutely adored this book! As someone who has been rescuing dogs since childhood, this heartwarming tale of a stray dog searching for a home really touched my heart.

The artwork is both wonderful and unique, which is a must for any picture book. It brings to life the charming world of Butternut Street and captures Arfy’s (the dog) mood swings perfectly. Arfy’s facial expressions are so touching and endearing that you can’t help but fall in love with him.

Oscar, the lone dachshund in the neighborhood, gets teased about his size and shape by the other dogs. 

"Weiner dog! Weiner dog!" they shout. His mother's no help. When he's leaving for school, she affectionately calls out for all to hear, "Farewell, my little Vienna sausage!"

For Halloween, Oscar's mother surprises him with a costume—a hot dog bun with mustard. Poor Oscar wanted to look scary but ends up feeling silly. On Halloween night, he's left trailing after the others with an empty treat basket. The tables are turned when a scary monster frightens the bullies and Oscar comes to their rescue.

This simple, well-told story is brought to life with wonderful Dav Pilkey illustrations that make you laugh and tug your heartstrings. It's a great book for any time of year.

This is a classic. The enchanting illustrations and delightful humor mesmerized my 3-year-old, who kept asking to read it over and over throughout his childhood and insisted on buying the rest of the books in the series.

The interactive lift-the-flap elements really capture young readers' attention, and the character, Spot, is simply irresistible.

This is a gentle, joyful story about perseverance and growing up. 

A young boy named Peter wishes he could whistle. When he sees that another boy can whistle to get his dog to run to him, he wants to do the same with his dachshund Willie. Peter tries and tries to learn. He tries so hard his cheeks get tired. He doesn't give up and triumphs in the end.

Several other books by Ezra Jack Keats feature Peter and Willie together and they're a pair worth knowing. 

Pretzel, the world's longest dachshund, is smitten with a little dachshund named Greta and wants to marry her. 

He tries to win her favor with gifts and a demonstration of his impressive pretzel pose, but she repeatedly rejects his advances. "I don't care for long dogs," she proclaims.  

Then, one day, Greta falls into a deep hole and, thanks to being so long, Pretzel's able to rescue her. He proposes on the spot and she accepts.

I leave it to you to decide how you feel about the premise of this classic story. The good news is the marriage lasts and leads to Pretzel and the Puppies. 

In this sequel, each spread is a self-contained cartoon strip featuring Pretzel as the well-meaning dad who gets into one jam after another. It's light-hearted, affectionate, and action-packed.

In the spirit of the children's song "Ten Little Monkeys," this book has ten very cute dachshunds who, one by one, go on, then off a great big armchair.  

One little dachshund wants a friend to join him. Two little dachshunds have room for a third. Three little dachshunds want a bone to chew. Four want a ball for a game of catch. Five want a sock to tug. And so on till there are ten little dachshunds on the chair. 

Tired out, they fall asleep, then wake up and jump off one by one, leaving the first dachshund behind. When his nap is finished, he sits up and says, "Hey, you little hot dogs, wake up and play!"  

It's happy, silly dachshund fun with lots of lively barking, yipping, yapping, drooling, snoring, and more. 

I love a book that encourages a family to come together and enjoy the simpler things in life like a beautiful starry night, and that is what Blackout by John Rocco does.

The city in this book experiences a blackout at night. Without all the gadgets, TVs, and other distractions, a young kid and his family find their way to enjoy each other and their beautiful city in the pitch dark of night under a blanket of stars. Although my family is very plugged in, we make the effort to unplug now and again, go outside, and enjoy the Texas night sky. 

This is the new bedtime book for all, as it perfectly captures the sounds that might happen at night when you are trying to fall asleep in the city.

Families in a red brick building are fast asleep until a baby wakes up crying, and then mayhem ensues with a loud parrot, a game of flashlight tag, and a car alarm set off by a cat. Now that everyone is awake, it’s time to settle back to bed with the more soothing sounds of the night. My family can relate to these city sounds, as they were raised near downtown Austin.

This story focuses on the subtle and simple sounds that you may hear during the beginning of a day. The illustrations evoke all things sunrise and the words match with their lyrical flow and call to action. This book will encourage everyone, even late sleepers like me, to throw off their covers, jump out of bed, and see what the day has to offer. 

In this wordless picture book, a young child comes out of his tent to find his boot all with the help of a trusty flashlight.

Then he begins to explore the wilderness at night, shining his flashlight on various animals and plants. It’s like another world is revealed. This story is playful and full of opportunities to seek and find all the amazing nocturnal creatures that enjoy the cover of darkness. At our current home, we have lots of nocturnal animals lurking around. Time to get out the flashlight!
